FP2003 Hyperlink Problem

L

Lisa J

Just recently, when I try to add a hyperlink, the Insert Hyperlink window
opens and any open files display, but I can't view any other pages in my site
to use as a hyperlink. I have to manually type in the complete address to
make it work. Any ideas as to how to fix this? Thanks. Lisa

If you're working on a page at a level below the root of your web ( in another folder ) you need to
click the up one level icon ( Folder icon with the green arrow ) and Browse your web files.

Steve,
I know that's how it should work, but it doesn't. The files don't show. It
used to work fine, so I figure something changed. I can even open another
site in this window and see the files, just not the ones in the site I am
updating. Strange.

Close FrontPage.
Use windows search and search for files named *.web ( with the asterisk ) and delete all found.
Reopen FrontPage and the web.

I have the same problem. Just on one Web Site and from different computers.
Deleted all the *.web files but no luck. Not just the hyperlink dialog box
but any box that is supposed to list files, ie: picture
properties/general/browse.

This Web Site is years old and never had a problem (not true, did get
duplicate file names showing in Folder List once and your solution offered
here corrected the problem).

Have run Health Check and Recalculate as well.

The one web site / different computers part has me really puzzled.

Brett...

I started a thread about this some time ago (http://tinyurl.com/6tj8x) and
no-one could fix it and I can't find anything in the KB.
Therefore it looks as if it is a FP 2003 bug.

What is strange is that the phenomenon only occurs on certain webs. I
maintain around 200 FrontPage webs and only a small proportion have the
problem. Opening up the problem sites in FP2000 results in no problem. I
have access to multiple copies of FP2003 clients and they all exhibit the
problem with the problem webs. All of which adds up to a strange problem.

My next step is to try updating the FPSEs to 2002 from the current 2000
version.

Has anyone reported this to Microsoft?

Hey guys... I tried it from home. Same problem. It is the site. I have Front
Page 2002 at home and 2003 at work-- didn't matter, couldn't see the files.
If anyone figures out why, I would love to know. Thanks. Lisa

Heres an update on my fix:

After following all the advise, I resorted to rebooting the server (Win2000
with FP2002 extensions) and all returned to normal.

David,
It isn't on our server. Florida Digital Network hosts the site. I simply use
FP to access and update the site live. Do you think I should contact them?
Thanks. Lisa

Well, I guess if you have exhausted all other avenues, you have no other
choice. I can't tell you why the reboot fixed the problem, and quite
honestly, it is the first time I have ever had to do a (server) reboot to fix
a FrontPage problem. So they may not be very receptive to that idea. They
should, however, work with you to solve the problem.

Have you tried using FP2003 from a different computer? That is the next step
I would try. Just to make sure it isn't a local problem.

Do you have a friend with FP2003 who can connect and verify the problem
exists? If you are worried about security, change your current password first
and then change it back afterwards.

A temporary bandaid:

Open the files you know you will need to create links to. They will then
show in the hyperlink dialogue window when it opens. This was my work around
until I solved the problem.

Brett...

I can forsee all sorts of problems here....

Customer: Will you reboot your server as I can't see my files running
FrontPage 2003?
....
< cut lots of discussions about recalculating hyperlinks, deleting temp, wab
files etc etc>
....
Host: Can you see the files with FP2000?
Customer: Err yes.
Host: Oh right, the problem must be our end, of course I'll just reboot our
server running all those other customers websites....

Yeah right...

If running on Windows 2000/2003 IIS servers, a web site can be stopped and restarted without
effecting any other site on the server.
