FP2003 - inserting files

M

Malcolm

When I inserted a PDF into a Web page FP2003 told me that the necessary
converters were not available and I OKd their installation.

On completion of the installation of the converters a page of code was
displayed that from the context of the opening lines is the source code
of the PDF.

Have I made an error or is there something I have overlooked? I would
appreciate guidance please.

You don't need to insert the file, simply make a link to the file.

I think you're on the wrong track here. The web is all about linked files;
therefore to put a PDF in your site, all you are really doing is linking to
that file, which will open in the user's PDF reader. To link to a file in
your FP web (make sure the web is open first (file > open > site). Also
ensure you've imported the file (File > Import).

Next you just insert > Hyperlink, choose the file and click OK and that's
about it.

Not sure what you've done as you describe. Can you show a page (on the web)
of what you're describing?

You don't insert a .pdf on a page - you make a link to the .pdf file.
If you need the .pdf to display as part of the page, then make an
iFrame, and use the .pdf as the source for the iFrame.

....or if you want to display the pdf page you can convert it to an image
sometimes...like a gif, but watch the file's size.

Andrew - thank you for your reply. FWIW I have been using FrontPage
since 1997/1998 but you were not expected to know that! {8;-))

My question was in basic terms trying to keep simple. I have a download
link which I am already aware works as you state. But I have been asked
to include the text of the PDFs on pages as well. Unfortunately these
pages are in the Members' Area to which access is restricted to members
of my golf club.

The site is at www.sandiwaygolf.co.uk/

At present my procedure is to import the PDF into the downloads folder
of the Web and then copy and paste its text, occasionally images as
well, into the contents area of a page. In doing this much of the
formatting of the text is lost and there is a carriage return at the end
of each line that doubles the line spacing. So I have to spend some
time formatting the page manually. I am trying to find a way to avoid
the tedium of reformatting.

When I installed the converters I did not expect to be presented with a
page of complex code.

Thank you Ron - I'll try an iFrame next time. Also please see my reply
to Andrew Murray.

You can copy/paste the text from a PDF to a text file (e.g. notepad) then
copy/paste to your web page, or even copy/paste straight into Frontpage.
That will insert the text of the file, but not the file itself.
