FP2003: Theme Font Styles A Mess?

R

Richard Saunders

I derived a custom theme from a pre-existing one, changed bitmaps,
colors, and so forth, and all was well.

Now I've spent the past few hours wrestling with adding and changing
font styles, and this has been unbelievably painful. I'm curious as to
whether I'm missing something, or if FP2003 is just a big mess in this
regard.

I finally found that the only way I could reliably add *new* styles was
to attach a brand new style sheet to my .dwt file.

However, I've found no way to *change* HTML tag styles (e.g., body).
I've tried changing it through the style selector ("Modify Theme", "More
Text Styles..." "Modify..." "Format" "Font" ...", and the changes save
and show up in the Customize Theme preview window. But the changes do
not show up in the document, even after attaching to a new theme then
back to the desired theme, and other attempts to trick FP into behaving.

I'd appreciate any advice on how to make this work!

Did you save the modified theme under a new name, remove the current theme, and then apply your new
modify theme?

Just tried that. No luck, changed fonts appear in the Customize Theme
review window, but not in the actual document.

Try running Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks.

If your text is in tables, CSS is notorious for not cascading into table cells
- create the font style for td / th / caption / p and body tags to cover all bases

Ok, you will need to wait for a reply from someone else that work with themes more than I do, for a
possible solution.

BINGO! Thanks! That worked!

I actually knew that. I just switched to FrontPage from doing
handcoding, and somehow must have thought that those problems would
magically be abstracted away. I guess that even when using FrontPage,
one must always be thoughtful about how the HTML is behaving behind the
scenes.

Another question: changing theme styles via the endless series of
dropdowns is wearying. Is there a style sheet that's associated with a
theme that's safe to edit directly? I understand these are subject to
being written over.

Thanks again,

Richard

And edits in theme style sheets will be overwritten if you run a tools recalculate hyperlinks (automatic on publishing)
- FP rereads the themename .elm file

Only way to edit the theme's styles outside of Format Theme is to use granular editing of the themename1111.css file in the theme
..elm file
- essentially extract the file edit it and pack it back into the .elm
You find a link to the tools needed under Granular Theme editing at

Thanks!

This seems pretty unintuitive, but necessary; using the drop-down boxes
alone causes problems, such as not being able to specify a group of
fonts (e.g., font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;)
so that font degrades gracefully on a client that doesn't have an
intended font.

I'm thinking of getting away from themes entirely - are there any bad
gotchas if I do this? I'm thinking that adding navigation bots will not
work.

Thanks,

Richard

Not using Themes, Shared Borders or FP Navigation components, allows you to have a lot more
flexibility and control of your site design and navigation structure.
