FP98 vs. Win XP

Karen

I've just upgraded to Windows XP and I'm still running
FP98 on it, except that I can't seem to get FP98 to work
now.

I've uninstalled the Personal Web Server and I know that
the Internet Information Server is installed and running.
I also just installed the FP SEs from this page:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?
url=/library/en-us/dnservext/html/fpse02win.asp

And I followed the first set of directions labeled "To
enable FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions for Windows Server
2003" on this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?
url=/technet/prodtechnol/sppt/sharepnt/proddocs/admindoc/ow
sd02.asp

I see there's something on that page about NFTS vs. FAT
memory. I know that my hard drive is FAT, but I didn't see
where to go to get the conversion tool they mentioned.

Could that be my problem?

Here's exactly what's happening:

I open FP Explorer. I get the "Getting Started" dialog
box. Open an Existing Web is selected. The web I want is
highlighted. I click OK and I get:

'C760865-A' is not a valid host name or IP address.

and it brings me back to the same dialog box.

Then, about two minutes later, I connected to the Internet
(totally independent of what I was doing on FP). I go back
to the FP dialog box, click OK and this is the error I get:

The server could not complete your request. Contact your
Internet service provider or web server administrator to
make sure that the server has the FP SEs installed. For
more specific information, click Details.

When I click Details, this is what I get:

Error 405 Method Not Allowed
Error 405 Method Not Allowed
The request method POST is not allowed for URL
/_vti_bin/shtml.exe/_vti_rpc
Powered by Zeus Technology

BTW, this is where all the files for the web in question
live:

C:\WEBSHARE\WWWROOT\asrnet

All I want to do is to get to these files and edit them so
I can then publish them to the server where they live out
on the Internet.

The error that 'C760865-A' is not a valid host name means that FrontPage is
looking for your webs at http://C760865-A This is the name of your PC. If
you changed the name of your PC (right-click on My Computer to check), then
you need to use the new name. To avoid this confusion choose File, Open Web
and put http://localhost/ This is a generic name for your local web server
and will work on all PCs.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I haven't changed the name of my computer. However, when I
go to the Getting Started dialog box and I choose "asrnet
(local)" (it's labeled "http://localhost/asrnet" under the
list of web choices), I get:

System exception: access violation

The personal web server is not supported past win 98. You need to run
windows xp professional edition with IIS installed. Other wise local web
publishing is limited to hard disk based webs. The other option is to
connect directly to your remote web server rather than publishing from a
local web.

Open IIS, right-click on the "default web site" web and , under all tasks,
choose to install the FP server extensions. If the are already installed
the choose to check them. This will do a repair on the server extensions.
If that doesn't work you'll need to remove and reinstall them.

Re: FAT vs. NTFS
IMHO on Win XP Pro you really should convert to NTFS
