On trying to convert a folder to a subweb I was advised that the FP98 web
opened in FP2003 was not a disk based web, even though the path was C:\Front
Page Webs\myweb.
Can I convert it to a disk based web
Thanks in advance

When the program announced that it is not a web, it asks if
you would like to make it one. Answer yes.

Hi Chuck, Many thanks for your response, not offered to make a web, summary
of message as follows,
"unable to ceate a disk based web at C:\FP WEbs, Parent web would not be a
disk based web, create disk based web outside your document heirarchy"
How do I make my existing web outside doc heirarchy?
Thanks

The error message indicates that at one time you accessed the webs using a
webserver. FP98 would (probably) create the web in the c:/Webshare folder
as a server based web.
Disc-based subwebs cannot be created in a server based web.
If you do not have IIS installed publish the web to a another folder (create
a new folder at C:\myweb) on the hard disc, then you will be able to create
subwebs within it.

FP98 uses Server based webs, and set up the webshare folder as a server
based web. Subsequent websites placed in this folder are also server based.
FrontPage 2000 and later are capable of opening Server based webs as disc
based. And everything will work perfectly until you try to create a new
web, or subweb. FP cannot create a disc based subweb under a web created on
a server no matter how long you have been using the web as disc based.

Publishing the sites to another area of the hard disc removes the Server
elements from the webs, and allows disc based subwebs to be created. You
can then, if you wish, remove the original folder with Windows explorer.

Hi Ron,
Thank you for your prompt reply.
I now understand what is meant by "disc based web" your help was very
detailed and understandable.
I will do as you say and thanks again.

Hi Ron,
I have published to C:\FP2003 webs as suggested,
"Shared Borders" is greyed out and there are no headers or footers, also
there is no "Tools/Security" option in the Tools menu so I cannot add a part
web password.
I should mention that I am using a Trial version of FP2003.
Thanks

Shared Borders:

Tools->Page Options->Authoring Tab
Tick Shared Borders check-box.

If this is a new web, consider using Dynamic Web Templates and/or include
files instead of shared borders.

Security: Permissions is not available on Disc Based Webs. You will have
to set up the security settings on the live site anyway, since permissions
are never published between webs.
To set unique permissions on the local web, you must install IIS (only
available on Win XP Pro, Win2000 and Win 2003) and install and configure FP
extensions, and publish the web to http://localhost/webname

Hi Ron,
Once again thank you for your explicit reply, I have XP SP2 so I will not be
able to use IIS.
This is an ex FP98 site, however I like FP2003 and will probably upgrade
from the trial, I may build another site offline using Dynamic and Include
then replace it when complete.

IIS is available on Win XP Pro, not on Win XP Home
- SP level doesn't matter
