Framework X library loading error

S

Simon Schultz

I have reinstalled Office X on a new computer - a G5 running 10.3.2.
When I initially reinstalled it, I just copied the application over to
the new computer, then applied all the patches / updates. I get an
error every time I start up,
"An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft
Framework X library".
The program still works then (or appears to).
I have tried reinstalling from the CDs, but still get the same
problem.

Is there some file somewhere that I have to change the permissions on?
Does anyone have a solution to this?

Thanks in advance,
Simon

Simon, I'm having exactly the same problem. All Office apps give the
error you're reporting. Interestingly, I created a new account on the
problem system and the Office apps launch just fine. Also interesting,
copying all Prefs files I could find on the new account into the
problem account didn't help. I've been through all the User
directories in the two accounts, and I'll be darned if I can figure
out what's happening. Next thing to try is showing invisible files.

The difference between you and me: I just reinstalled a new OS X
10.2.8 OS; didn't copy anything across. Even reinstalling Office from
the CDs didn't fix the problem. It's got to be something with our user
directories.

Simon...an update.

I've now gone through looking for invisible files. No luck. I moved
the New_User...Library...Prefs files I could find for Office into my
prefs folder, replacing the original ones. No luck. Still the same
error.

At this point I don't know what to do. I may need to just create a new
user account for myself and start over. I've noticed a couple of other
problems since reinstalling the OS from scratch (NOTE: I did NOT do an
archive/install, but preserved my prefs in a different folder, and
then did a totally clean install, and then moved preserved prefs into
my new account). So far, I can't get Wacom drivers to load when in my
account, even though I keep uninstalling them and reinstalling them.
Also, I have a small problem with a Nikon editing program. So maybe
there's something going on somewhere other than MS that's causing
these problems?

Have you learned anything?

Couple of suggestions:

1) "An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft
Framework X library."
http://www.entourage.mvps.org/errors.html#anchor-error_framework

2) With OSX you need to make sure the Trash is emptied after a
deinstall, not just that files are in the trash. Check that you
don't have an old Framework X in the Trash.

3) Repair Permissions:

Run the Disk Utility (in the ./Applications/Utilities
folder). From the First Aid tab, click "Repair Disk Permissions".

4) Make sure Office Notifications was not set to launch at Login.
Before restarting the computer go to System
Preferences/Accounts/Startup Items, and Remove "Microsoft Database
Daemon" if it's there.

This behavior may occur if files in the Office v. X Identities: Identity
folder are locked.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

Quit any Office v. X programs that are currently running.
On the desktop, open your computer's hard disk, and then locate the
following folder:

Hard disk :Users: User_Name :Documents:Microsoft User Data:Office X
Identities
Open the folder for the affected identity.
Verify that files in the Identity folder are not locked.

Thanks for the suggestion, Diane. Unfortunately it didn't work. I'm
now really frustrated. Looks like the only way I can get MS Office
apps to launch without the Framework X error is to create a totally
new account for myself and recreate all of my user settings.

At this point I've used the Office Uninstaller, manually trashed all
Office files I could find in my User account (prefs and Documents
folders), reinstalled Office, repaired Permissions, and I still get
the bloody error.

I wish someone could tell me what problems I might encounter if I just
live with the error. So far I don't seem to be experiencing any ill
effects.

Just to make sure - when you ran Remove Office from the Install CD
(not from your HD), you ran it after repairing permissions, and from
an administrator account?

(There's absolutely no reason it should need this, but I've seen one
report that running Remove Office twice worked for them)

You emptied the trash after running Remove Office?

Did you apply the 10.1.2, 10.1.4 (and, I'd suggest, 10.1.5) updates
from

MacTopia Downloads
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx

? If so, is the Microsoft Framework X file version in the Microsoft
Office X:Office: folder at version 10.1.4. Did you repair
permissions *after* installing the updates?

You left your Microsoft User Data (MUD) folder in your ~:Documents
folder (where ~ is your home directory)?

Thanks J.E. I really appreciate the help you folks have provided.

I just FIXED the problem! No reinstalls were ever needed.

I have two licenses from Office, so I have it looked at the privileges
on the files in my User:Library:preferences folder. Comparing the
privileges on my problem machine with the equivalents on the other
machine that's working fine, I found that a number of differences. I
manually set the privs on each file in the problem machine to be
identical to those on the working machine. Suddenly everything works
perfectly on the problem machine.

I don't recall ever fiddling with permissions, so I don't know how
things got hosed. But Disk Utility (OS 10.2.8) didn't fix the problem,
though I've run it several times.

So now I'm kinda irked at Microsoft. It looks to me like the
"Framework X" error really should say, "The permissions on your user
preferences are set wrong", or something else that would steer a
stupid user to the right problem. Or at least have something in help
documentation to point users here.

Thanks again; all of your comments that emphasized permissions were
what got me looking into this.
