frameworks library error (right before my m.a. exam!)

Dear all,
My Microsoft Word program started freezing up on me during my M.A.
written exam this week. I had my computer (an iBook G4) checked out and
apparently
the hardware looks fine. I was told to uninstall and then reinstall my
Microsoft Office 2004. I put the CD in, and I was never asked to
unistall/remove the existing Office 2004, so I just installed it. I
finished that process, then agreed to remove older versions of the
program when asked. I restarted my computer. Now, when I open Word, I
get a pop-up message saying that there has been an unepexted error
while trying to load the Microsoft Frameworks library. I don't know
what
that is, or if it may cause a problem. As I'm about to take the next
portion of
my M.A. exam, I feel very concerned about whether or not I may have a
problem during
the exam.
I can't seem to figure out a number to call Microsoft for Office 2004
support, so I thought I'd just ask if any of you happen to know what
might be causing the problem...
I would really appreciate any advice!!!
Thanks so much!

Did you empty the trash after the uninstall/reinstall?

Here are the other usual causes for the framework error:

1. it's most likely a permissions error having to do with the MUD
(Microsoft User Data file). Quit all Office apps and navigate to your
identity folder in the MUD. Do a Get Info (Command>i) on all the identity's
files and make sure the "Locked" box is not checked. Also be sure you have
full permissions.

2. You can also get the framework error if you have more than one version
of Office and have opened an app from a previous version. You need to quit
all Office apps *and* use Activity Monitor to quit all database daemons.
Then relaunch your usual version of Word, etc.

3. And, this error message can occur if Word can't load some of the shared
resources because the Entourage database is not available. This can happen
if the database is in the process of being compacted or rebuilt.

Please report back on whether any of these suggestions works (or not). HTH.

Dear Beth,
Thanks so much for your reply!!!
My Word has now frozen up again (I'm just getting the colorwheel cursor
that won't go away or let me close the program, etc.).
One thing I'm not sure about is whether or not I actually DID uninstall
Office 2004 before/after reinstalling it. I expected the installation
CD to give me a prompt that would allow me to uninstall before
reinstalling, but I never got that. Only after I had gone through the
setup instructions, at the very end, I was asked if I would like to
"remove" older versions (like 98, etc.). I said "yes," but it didn't
seem like I removed any existing Office 2004. So I'm thinking I did
not really uninstall it, and I'm not sure how to do that.
I'll try emptying the trash (I did not do that). You mean the regular
trashcan on the desktop, right?
Then I'll try following your other instructions.
I would be very glad to hear if you think there is some step I missed
when I was reinstalling the CD, though (like uninstalling)!
Thank you so much!! I'm quite concerned about having my computer in
working order this week, and I really do appreciate your time and tips!
Best,
Jillian

Dear Beth,
I just tried to follow your other instructions, but here is the
problem: I don't quite understand them!

First of all, when I try to empty my trash, I get a pop-up saying "The
operation cannot be completed because the item SETTINGS.DAT is locked."

Then, as to your other suggestions:
1. Where is the Microsoft Users Data File? I can't seem to find it...

2. I opened the Activity monitor, but am not sure how to quit all
database daemons...

3. I don't think this one would apply. I don't see why Entourage would
be in a process of rebuilding or compacting...

I'm sorry I'm so poorly versed in things as to be so helpless!
Thanks again so much!

Reboot and try emptying the trash again. Then reboot again...

Word is picking up a bad copy of Settings.dat from the trash, preventing it
operating normally.

Hope this helps
