I just started an online course. I download the link the teache
provides for homework and it opens up Excel. (Accounting class) I had n
problem inputting info on the 'pages' for last week, but today I canno
input answers... on top of the open excel page it says 'read onl
compatibility...
I got the free trial of Microsoft Office Excel 2007. I would like t
download excel 97-2003 (and power-point) but I can't find a downloa
link for the software... I can only find updates downloads.

I'm lost and about ready to throw in the towel on on-line classes!
was afraid I wouldn't have the software to do the work and participate
It worked fine last week...

Help, please... :frown

(I have Windows Vista.

Excel and Powerpoint are NOT free programs, even if they're a
previous version. If you do find a free download, it will be an
illegal (pirate) copy that may or may not work and that could be
infected with viruses. Either buy a Microsoft Office suite that
includes Excel and Powerpoint, or buy Excel and Powerpoint
separately, or use a legally free alternative such as OpenOffice.

Then do File-Save As. (Or in 2007, Office Button-Save As). Then you can edit
it.

There is now nowhere you can do that. You will have to buy it.

OK. Thanks.

It's unfortunate that students pay so much for online courses while
working but then have to buy a program to be able to submit work...
well, for some colleges.

I'll do a Office Button-Save As and if it doesn't work, I'll get me a
copy of the program (buy it!).

There are two separate issues here.
One, the file that you downloaded being marked "read-only" has nothing to do
with the Office suite you have - you would have to do a Save-As whatever you
opened it with in order to add data.
Secondly you WILL have to purchase Office when the trial runs out (which it
will in 60 days). The only alternative you have is to download and install
the free Open Office suite which should work most of the time - however
there are occasionally some compatibility issues between Open office and MS
Office.
Get it here:
www.openoffice.org

If you do go down this route be aware that you will have to set the default
document type as xls - the default setting in OO is ODS which MS Office
prior to 2007 SP2 won't be able to open.

I downloaded the OpenOffice and opened the homework file and the sam
thing happened: Read only. So I did a save as and it still won't work.
am so sorry but I am confused. Old person+computer software=

How do I set the default document type as xls? And will that make i
able for me to input info instead of it being just 'read only'

I'm not very good with computer jargon:

When you do a Save As, the Read-Only at the top disappears?
