In these days of “always-on†internet connections email programs are
generally run constantly. Unfortunately they take up valuable real-estate on
the Taskbar (especially now with the grouping introduced with WinXP). I
believe that email programs should be background applications like virus
checking programs with an icon in the system tray. Currently when you receive
an email, an envelope appears in the system tray; why not have a permanent
Outlook icon that changes into an envelope when mail arrives, a flashing memo
when a reminder occurs, etc.
The other advantage to having an “always-on†version of Outlook is that you
won’t accidentally miss appointments because you have inadvertently shutdown
Outlook. Perhaps you could even tie this into the system settings so that
your PC could be set to startup/recover from standby/etc. based on an Outlook
event. OK I admit I may be going over the top now but hey, if you can do it,
why not?
