free up disc space

[Icetime]

I constantly receive a msg "tofree up disc space, Outlook express can compact
messages etc" How can I stop this from appearing ??

Try posting this in an Outlook Express news group - this is not one of them.
Outlook is a part of Microsoft Office and is what this group supports.
Outlook Express is a part of Internet Explorer and has its own news groups.

Icetime

In Outlook Express place the cursor on Local Folders and select File,
Work Offline followed by File, Folder, Compact All. Do not attempt to
interupt or stop the process until it has completed. Close Outlook
Express when it has completed. This will stop the problem for a while
until you have closed Outlook Express 100 times.

After compacting check your Outlook Express folders are as they should
be. Then select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
CleanUp to Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files.
Also select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk
CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest
System Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

You may get a follow up response to Norman Miller's post from Bruce
Hagen about a problem affecting some computers. You almost certainly
will if you take Milly Staples' advice.

Do you continue to get the prompt if you let it compact? If so, see this.

The problem is with the registry counter that gives you the prompt after 100
closings of OE. It is being increased quicker than it should be and even if
you are not using OE.

There is a growing number of programs and actions that may be causing this
after installing SP3. Do you have any of the following?

IBM Rapid Access keyboard (driver) RAKDLL.DLL
Windows {Desktop} Search
Window Live Mail (even if it was removed)
Mailwasher
Nero plug-in(s)

Opening EML files while OE is closed will also contribute to the registry
count.

Various anti-virus, anti-spyware and third party firewalls, especially if
they were running when you installed SP3.

In the case of Windows Desktop Search, (the #1 offender), you have to tell
it to stop indexing OE.

Windows {Desktop} Search. Set Desktop Search Options:

In Windows {Desktop} Search: Control Panel | Indexing Options. Click: Modify
and clear the check box for Outlook Express.

In the option to exclude selected file types from indexing, be sure to add
these file types:

He would need to start subscribing.

The point is, this Outlook group is busy enough without off-topic threads
that take time to go through only to find there is nothing there to do with
Outlook at all.

Thanks Bruce, you just solved a big problem for us.

We have been getting this message on various machines that DO NOT and NEVER
HAVE used OE but do use Outlook 2007. I also note that nobody asked Icetime
if OE was in fact being used.

It would appear that Windows Desktop Search is indeed the culprit and will
cause this message whether or not OE is in use.

You're welcome. This can happen whether or not you are using OE, so it
wasn't really necessary to ask Icetime. Most people that don't use OE let us
know that right off.
