Freeze Panes

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel 'Am able to freeze headers in other current workbooks but the one in question has me baffled. 'Can't do it. View is NORMAL and a proper cell selected. 'Need to know what I've done, better yet, what I now need to do. Thanks!

And we need to know;

What your exact update levels of Office & OS X are, and

What --specifically-- is preventing you from using the feature? What
is --different-- in that workbook than in the others?

Without any detailed information my only guess is that Workbook Protection
is enabled.

OFFICE-12.2.3. EXCEL12.2.3, OS 10.6.2
Protection is not involved. Workbook is 97-2004 w/customary .xls extn.
'Have checked other similar WBs which I've updated since 2008 was installed and "Freeze" works. It also works on new .xlsx books, as well.
Unfortunately, I see no other relevant differences between this and those that work. 'Was hoping you might have another clue or two. Thanks

Well, it's kind of hard to "have another clue or two" when you still haven't
described what the problem is... 'Doesn't work' doesn't disclose very much.

Is the menu command dimmed?

Is it active but when you select it do the Freeze lines not appear?

Do the Freeze lines appear but the frozen lines continues to scroll?

Is the problem with all sheets in the file? Only one? Only certain ones?

If this is an older file the only guess I can offer is that the file may
have some form of corruption. Have you tried a Save As in .xlsx format to
see if the problem follows into the new file?

Have you copied the active data range into a new workbook to see if the
problem continues?

There is no 'fix Freeze Panes switch' to point you to. We're more than glad
to help where we can but you've got to give us something to work with.

ANOTHER ATTEMPT: 1.) Freeze lines do not show in the WB sheets. 2.)Menu commands are not shaded. Upon clicking Freeze/Unfreeze, it seems normal, except no FREEZE lines appear. Lower toggle does chg shape slightly and freezes rt side of WB. 3.) All sheets of the WB affected. 4.) one sheet copied to new WB w/same results. 5.) Saving as xlsx=no change.

I'm afraid I don't know what else to suggest. I've never seen the feature
fail to work for any reason other than what's been explored & I can't force
the problem to reproduce here. Since the feature works OK in all other files
it points to some sort of problem with that specific workbook.

If you did copy just the active data area of the sheet rather than the
entire sheet to a new workbook file I don't see how the problem could have
carried over. I guess it's possible that the problem happens to be within
that range, but it's hard to conceive of it carrying over to *all* sheets in
the original book if it's a 'sheet-specific' issue.

Perhaps the last portion of your point #2 could shed more light on it, but I
have no idea what a "Lower toggle" refers to nor what kind of a shape change
it could undergo. Also, can you further describe what you mean by "freezes
rt side of WB"? The Freeze Panes feature fixes the leftmost columns &
topmost rows, so if the right side is freezing there is a most definite
problem with the file. If that's the case I'm not sure it can be repaired.

If you have access to a Windows system running Excel 2003 or 2007 you might
try opening a copy there. The WinOffice apps are better equipped to
recover/repair damaged files.

'Finally got back into the matter and problem is resolved. SPLIT was enabled in the WB. 'Don't know when or why I kicked it on but, upon removing it, Freeze Panes became functional. I assume I mistakenly hit it when first attempting to FREEZE and simply didn't notice nor even understood the impact.

Thanks for your time and effort.
