Freeze panes

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) I would like to freeze all of Row 1 AND all of Column A. When I freeze one, then go to freeze the second, it will not let me. The only freeze option is to unfreeze panes? Can both be done at the same time?

Select cell B2, then turn on Freeze Panes.

You can't freeze columns & rows separately. The freeze applies to all rows
above & all columns to the left of the selected cell when you turn it on.

This advice to the previous questioner sounds great, but no matter what cell I select the Freeze Panes command is grayed out. In another message thread I read that 'Protection' may be the problem, and this makes sense because earlier I was using Track CHanges. But how do I _cancel_ Protection? As soon as I uncheck all the boxes the OK button disappears. I can't do anything else in the program until I click Cancel but at soon as I do that ... my unchecks are replaced with the checkmarks that preceded them.

I'm a relatively new Mac user with a dozen years of Windows experience, which often acts as a handicap when trying to figure out the Mac. I'm running a 2009 MacBook with OS X 10.5.8 and Excel:Mac 2008, version 12.2.3 (091001). The workbook I'm in was created on this machine and saved in Excel 97-2004 (.xls) so I could e-mail it to an older computer.

Thanks in advance for any guidance you can give.

Well, there should be no handicap in this case because the Windows versions
prior to 2007 work exactly the same way :)

The protection referred to earlier in this thread is Protect *Workbook*, not
Protect *Sheet*. Protect Sheet does not disable Freeze Panes & the command
would have read as 'Unprotect Sheet' had it been turned on. It sounds like
you've wandered into the Protect Sheet dialog so Cancelling out of it is all
you need do. Also, Track Changes & Protection are separate & unrelated
features, so turning Track Changes on does not enable either type of
Protection or disable Freeze Panes.

Freeze Panes is disabled if Workbook Protection is turned on ‹ you need only
look in Tools> Protection to see if the command reads as 'Unprotect
Workbook' rather than 'Protect Workbook'. If it does, just select the
command to turn the Workbook protection off.

Another possibility is that you have turned on the Split feature (also in
the Window menu). Freeze Panes & Split can't be used at the same time on the
same sheet. Look in the Window menu to see if 'Remove Split' appears ‹ if it
does, select it to turn the Split feature off. When you reopen the Window
menu you should find Freeze Panes ready to go.
