Well, there should be no handicap in this case because the Windows versions
prior to 2007 work exactly the same way
The protection referred to earlier in this thread is Protect *Workbook*, not
Protect *Sheet*. Protect Sheet does not disable Freeze Panes & the command
would have read as 'Unprotect Sheet' had it been turned on. It sounds like
you've wandered into the Protect Sheet dialog so Cancelling out of it is all
you need do. Also, Track Changes & Protection are separate & unrelated
features, so turning Track Changes on does not enable either type of
Protection or disable Freeze Panes.
Freeze Panes is disabled if Workbook Protection is turned on ‹ you need only
look in Tools> Protection to see if the command reads as 'Unprotect
Workbook' rather than 'Protect Workbook'. If it does, just select the
command to turn the Workbook protection off.
Another possibility is that you have turned on the Split feature (also in
the Window menu). Freeze Panes & Split can't be used at the same time on the
same sheet. Look in the Window menu to see if 'Remove Split' appears ‹ if it
does, select it to turn the Split feature off. When you reopen the Window
menu you should find Freeze Panes ready to go.
