freezes when an old server is off

I have encountered a very odd problem. Our old server where all the files and
templates used to reside is slow being cleaned out and everything moved to
new servers. We have moved out all the docs and templates a while back
already and renamed (with $) all the shares so that no one can access the old
servers mistakenly. Yesterday we did a test run and turned off that old
server. It turns out that almost all the old files which now reside on a new
server will not open and word just freezes. Once I turn that old server back
on, the file opens. Can anyone think of a possible connection or how I can
tell?

It is because the documents are looking for their original attached
templates and they are designated as being in the old server which
(obviously) they cannot find. I expect that had you left Word sufficient
time, they would have opened (10 mins possibly).

The solution is to use the redirect utility on the new server redirecting
from oldservername/path/template to the new location.
