freezing or locking columns in Word for XP

I have a table in Word that I want to lock the first
column of text so that I cannot change it (without going
thru another step) and so that when I tab
around the table the cursor will not enter the first
column. Anyone know a how to do this?

You can't protect a table column in Word as you can in Excel, but you can
protect the whole table (that is, the section it is in) and then insert form
fields in the cells where you want to permit data entry. See
