freezing panes but just the first line (or column header info)

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Not even sure what I'm looking for in Excel, but I've seen it done, just don't know how to do it. Looking to freeze ONLY the very first line which is my header or column headings. I want to be able to scroll down the massive list I have and still see the column headings there on top. Menu: Window > Freeze Panes, sort of does this, but I can't figure out how to make it just the very first line? You'd think this was something easy to find in Excel?

Freeze Panes applies to the row(s) above & the column(s) to the left of the
cell selected at the time you turn the feature on. If you want to freeze
only Row 1 and no columns, select cell A2 before activating Freeze Panes.

No chastisement intended, but this is one of the [few] features that's well
described & fully documented in Excel Help :) Any program's Help is always
the first & usually the quickest resource to consult.

Try selecting the first row and then choosing freeze panes.

Tanks for the replies! That worked. CyberTaz, sorry, but I've always been under the impression that a program should be intuitive and easy to use. I think Microsoft has always strived to do the opposite of that.

Well, I'm sure MacBU would be willing to entertain any suggestions for
improvement :) The black lines that appear above & to the left of the cell
selector when you turn the feature on seem to me like a pretty explicit
indicator of where the freeze has been applied. I don't claim to be
unusually perceptive but their positioning strikes me as being more than
just random or coincidental.

At any rate, I'm glad you were able to make the feature more useful.
