I am using Office 2008 and I am very satisfied about the product.

However, I have a problem with a file.

Every time, I open it Word freezes. I tried to change the extension but the results are always the same.

The file is a modified version of a Word 2003 file.

Thanks for your help.

First point is don't *ever* arbitrarily change file extensions. Doing so
does nothing to change the file type but it does tell an application what
tools to use to open the file. If being told to use the wrong tools a
program's attempt to open it could damage the file even further.

If a file can't be opened by a program that "should" be able to open it the
suggestion is that there is something problematic with the file. It could be
that something within the file is corrupt, that the file is corrupt or that
the file has content that Word 2008 can't handle - not everything doable in
2003 is compatible on a Mac.

In order to determine what the problem is you'll need to try opening the
file with a Windows version of Word (2003 or 2007). It could be VBA, corrupt
images, tables, sections or any number of other possible causes. The Windows
version should be able to repair the file or permit removal/replacement of
the corrupt content. Once you can provide a "clean" copy you should be able
to open it with 2008.

If that isn't possible use the File> Open command from within Word [as
opposed to double-clicking the file] & post back with specific details about
what happens when you do - does any part of the file appear before the
freeze, etc. If you can't open the file, though, you can't fix the problem.
Keep in mind that how the file is transferred from PC to Mac can cause such
a situation - email attachments or saving directly to removable media are
particularly problematic.
