Hi!
When i set my langage option on french my grammar and spelling doesn't work!

There's a message saying that the programm does't find de french file!

Does the custum dictionnary include french?

Thanks!

Hi Marie-Aimee:

Yes, French is included as a language in the Office proofing tools.

However, you must mark the Text of the document in French for the spelling
checker to work. Use Tools>Language to do that.

NOTE: Mac Word has only two dialects of French: "French", and "French
Canadian". PC Word has more.

If you receive a document that is marked to be in a language that you do not
have, you will get this error message. To fix it, try highlighting the text
and re-setting the language to French.

Please also be aware that I seem to remember there are some issues with
French Language. Sometimes it doesn't work!

I hope one of our Francophone MVPs will be along in the moment with more
detail.

Hope this helps

Well not that I know of now if Office is up to date.
It looks like a problem with custom dictionaries though (and I've seen
these - especially with Office 2008)

The same post was re-posted and Daiya and myself replied there.

Indeed we need to highlight the text then go to tools and select French. Then It works properly.

Just a question, is it possible to set French language up by default?

thx

If you want it to be the default everywhere, use Tools | Language,
select French, and then click Default. This will change all documents
created after you do that, but you'll need to fix old documents one by one.

If you want to write some documents in French and some in English, set
up a document that uses French as you like, and then save it as a
template and start your new French documents from it.

Seems to be helpfull. I ll try it. But can you tell me if dictionnaries are able to make the difference between French and English (without changing the default set up)?

Thanks!

Yes, the Dictionaries are more than happy to switch languages.

The Word spell-checker switches languages on the fly, and can do so
word-by-word.

The challenge is to mark the document so that it does.

Normally, set the language you use most often (e.g. French) as your Default.
Then highlight and set text in a different language.

If you do a lot of this, create two sets of Styles, one for French, and one
for, say, English. When you want to mark text, simply apply the English
style.

Everything you don't mark will be spelled in the Default language (French)
and everything with the English styles will be spelled in English.

Cheers

Fortunately, I looked for this before I posted! Thanks, everyone. The French spellcheck worked fine, now that I know how to do it.

Hi Bea:

Excellent! That is why the website encourages people to search before
posting.

And why the search is being fixed so it will work a lot better than it used
to :)

Come back anytime you have a problem we *haven't* got the answer to yet, and
we will be happy to help.

Cheers

I have Word 2004 and when I highlight the text and set French as the language of the document, Word tells me that it doesn't have the file for French. Hence, I cannot spell check in French at all.

Could anyone tell me where I can download the update or necessary files to have French spell check.

Thanks so much.

Check in the folder /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Shared
Applications/Proofing Tools/ to make sure: You should see the French
dictionary in there.

If not, it's on your Office 2004 or Word 2004 CD.

You can't download them anywhere.

If you see the dictionary, please post the exact text of the error message
so we can see what is wrong.

Cheers
