French handwriting recognition on an English Tablet PC

G

GIM010

Hi,I am new to the Tablet PC world and to OneNote 2003 in particular. The
Tablet PC runs WinXP SP1 and is configured in English. OneNote 2003 is up to
SP1 and is the English version.

When I write down notes in English with the language set to English (US),
OneNote converts the note without a problem and with more than excellent
results.

When I write down notes in French with the language set to French (Canada),
OneNote doesn't convert anything. In fact, it does nothing at all (the same
happens with French language selected [France, Belgium, etc...).

My thoughts are that I need to get the French lexicon and dictionary
installed in order to get this function working but I am not sure (this is a
corporate Tablet PC and I do not control how the software is installed). I'd
like to know for sure before I request these to be installed.

Thanks in advance!

Marc, you may want to look into using the Tablet PC Edition 2005 Recognizer
Pack:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...DD-5E92-4464-B907-10762E9F918B&displaylang=en
You need to upgrade your system to Windows XP SP2 and the Tablet PC Edition
2005 first, however:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/tabletpc/upgrade/default.mspx

The 2005 MUIRP supports Chinese (Traditional), Chinese (Simplified), U.S.
English, U.K. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and
Spanish.

Hi Chris,

Thank you very much. OneNote is now able to recognize both French and
English without a problem (I haven't installed the other languages since I
don't think I will be using them). This happened after installing both the
WinXP SP2 and the Tablet PC Edition 2005 Recognizer Pack.

One thing though, when I try to spell check the French words, OneNote keeps
defaulting back to the English dictionary and finds all the words to be in
error. This, even if I select the French dictionary in the Spell Check window
that appears.

Any thoughts on this one?

Your help is very appreciated and even if you don't have an answer for this
one, I think I can live without the French dictionary.

Thanks again!

I don't know, Marc. I'll ask Tablet PC MVP Fritz Switzer, who works with a
lot of dictionaries at his www.abletfactory.com to take a look at this and
see if he's got a solution for you.

GIM,

I'm seeing just the oposite. I set my Spell Check Language to French and
now when I change to English it reverts back to French. :(

With regard to handwriting recognition, when I have French (France) set with
my Language Bar, ink is recognized correctly. I also tried words that were
not duplicated in the English reco dictionaries, e.g. bonjour is in both
Eng/Fre. I will do some additional testing, but for both the spell checking
and recognition processes, the Language Bar "reversion" issue seems to a
problem.

The language of ink recognition is controlled by the language in the
langauge bar, as Fritz noted, although you can also manually set the
language in OneNote by selectign the text or ink and changing the language.

For typing in French or English, the official Windows way to do this is to
add another keyboard layout (Control Panel, Regional options, Languages,
Add, then set the language to the other language e.g. English, but choose
the keyboard layout that you have on your desk - e.g. French Canadian
multilingual or whatever). Then use Alt-Shift when you want to switch
languages. This also works great in Word and PPT.

If you don't want to do that, you can add the language dropdown in OneNote
(click the down-arrow at the end of the toolbar, then Add or Remove buttons,
then Formatting, then check the box next to "Language" at the bottom). Now,
either select text and apply the language or, click the bar at the top of
the shaded container to select it, and set the language. Now that and all
new containers will be that language.
