From E:\My Documents\My Webs to C:\My Documents\My Webs

I have a web out on the Internet which uses the ftp file transfer to the
server.

I had a major crash (memory went bad) in January, and when my computer was
rebuilt, I had my technician leave in the old drive where the OS is zilch,
but all my personal files are very usable. I've just installed a new WS_FTP
v. 9 and I think I've set it up correctly.

I've found my web, then, over on Drive E: (old drive C:) right where I left
it in My documents\My Webs and I'm ready to put it back into newly installed
(empty) FrontPage on C:\

How do I do that and not mess up anything? I understand I cannot use the
"Publish" command with a web that has to use ftp.

Can I copy the main web folder from E:\My Documents\My Webs directly to
C:\My Documents\My Webs?

And will this cause the folders and files to be changed to Read Only? Can I
prevent that?

Open the old web in FrontPage, then use File->Publish and type in the
new file location as the destination.
Generally, there is no reason to not publish a web, whether you use
FTP, file locations or an FP extended web server (though FP cannot
work with all FTP servers, it does work perfectly with some.)

I opened FrontPage > then Open Web
navigated over to E: and selected the folder (folder named Covenant) that
contains my web. The address in the dialog correctly states the location
E:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/My Documents/MY WEBS/Covenant
(the Covenant folder on E: has the globe, so it is already a web)

Chose File > Publish Web and typed in the new location:
C:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/My Documents/MY WEBS/Covenant
and clicked Publish
Restarted my machine

Opened FrontPage: Open Web and it finds web on E: so I renavigate to
C:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/My Documents/MY WEBS/and it is
there; has populated FrontPage, but it is without the "Covenant" folder.I see in the Help files if I delete the web on C: (to start over) it will
also delete that same web from E: - at least that's the way I'm readng it.

Is it possible to somehow re-create the Covenant folder that is supposed to
be holding all those files and images? I sure don't want to Convert to a
folder and lose hyperlinks on navigation bars, etc.

From FrontPage Help Files
Delete a web
Warning Use caution when deleting a web! Once you've deleted a web, it is
permanently destroyed and cannot be undeleted. If you created the web by
converting a folder on your computer (or on another computer) into a web,
that folder and all of its contents will be permanently deleted from that
computer unless you specify otherwise. To retain the contents of a web or
subweb as a folder on the computer, convert the web back into a folder
before following this procedure.

Besides not ending up with the "Covenant" folder when I published my web
from E: to C:, I have noticed that the My Documents folder on the desktop
has a My Webs folder that is empty. That means (I have now found out) that
(1) my technician had me set up in the Administrator's My Documents\My Webs
folder originally, and when he rebuilt my machine, he has now put me in
"Dan's" My Documents\My Webs folder (I'm still administrator with all
permissions).

Since I have to do the publish over again (1) to get the Covenant folder and
(2) to get it into Dan's My Documents\My Web folder, can I do a. and b.
below?

a. leave the current files in the Administrator's My Documents\My Webs
folder and just not use it (it doesn't have a name anyway (covenant).
and
b. publish from E: to C: again, but get it into Dan's folders? This is the
one which will be reflected in the Desktop's My Documents\My Webs folder.

Where I went to get the web:
E:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/My Documents/MY WEBS/Covenant

Where I put it: ( typed this in for destination)
C:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/My Documents/MY WEBS/Covenant

Where I SHOULD have put it:
C:\Documents and Settings\darlene\My Documents\My Webs

Can you tell me why I did not end up with a Covenant folder? but got all the
files?

Deleting a web within FrontPage will not affect any other web, except,
obviously, those that are subwebs of the deleted web.

Open the C:/..../Dan/My Documents/My Webs folder in FrontPage, then
create a new folder named Covenant, right click it and convert to a
web.
Open the E drive version, and publish to the
C:/...Dan/My Documents/My Webs/Covenant folder.

I use server based webs which create new subwebs when publishing. I
forgot that when publishing to disc based webs, the folder has to
exist first, and if a subweb it has to be a subweb before publishing.

The contents of the web in ...Administrator... can be deleted using
FrontPage without any damage to the web in Dan, or to the web on E
drive, or it can be ignored as you wish. Deleting the my webs folder
will not do any damage, it may just be inconvenient on some far off
day - but then, best practise dictates that the Administrator account
should only be used for administrating, not for productive work.

This does not, now, seem frightening)
What should my cursor be "on", then, (on E:) when I'm ready to publish back
to Dan's FrontPage on C:? The whole path? or just the Covenant folder? or
(other)?

In the publish dialogue, you should be able to browse to the covenant
folder on C:/
If you highlight the covenant folder, and you have made it a subweb
(shows as a folder with a globe) then click Open, that is where the
files should publish to.

ALL'S WELL! Up and Running!
My difficulty in not knowing was, when I first started building webs years
ago, I had a seventh grader teach me how to get to the internet (grin); and
then when I'd have a crash, I always had a Ghost backup to start over with.
This last time I couldn't bring in an old Ghost backup with now new
hardware, etc. so never learned this procedure. I am forever grateful. Thank
you, Ron
