From Mac to Windows: 1. Word 98 templates?

Is there any problem in transferring Word 98 templates to Word on
Windows 97 upwards? What directory/directories do they go in?

Thanks

Background
==========
I am handing over the administration of a residents' company to my
successor, and want to transfer as much of my computer stuff as I can.

I use Office 98 under Mac OS 9.2.2.

He uses various PCs with and Windows 98, Windows XP and Windows NT, but
is not expert on any. As an academic he does much of his research under
Linux, but even with that he doesn't normally dive into system stuff.

Neither of us knows much about Windows, but we think we're OK on the
transferring of standalone Word documents and Excel spreadsheets.

My email application, Outlook Express 5.02, has been set to add MS
extensions for files on their way to Windows. So it now itself adds .doc
to Word documents and .dot to Word templates.

Templates are cross-platform. Probably the easiest way to solve this would
be to open up Word on the PC and use Tools | Options, File Locations tab to
see where the My Templates folder is on the PC, and put your templates
there. Word and Excel templates go in the same place. Adding the file
extension is a good idea.

Hi Daiya:

Yes, I agree that your answer is correct for Word 98 templates moving to
Word 97+, provided the templates do not contain file paths.

However, moving backwards is a problem. You need to take the file extension
OFF or Mac Word will not recognise the thing as a template. That will not
worry WinWord: Windows has not needed extensions for years.

However, Macros written for Windows Word will have problems down-grading.
The easiest solution is to suck it and see. Mac Word will warn you
immediately you attempt to run a macro if there is a problem with it, and we
can help you out ion this newsgroup by showing you how to convert the macro
so it will work in both places.

Hope this helps
