front page 2003 and Office XP

Daytona Steve

I am running Office XP 2002 with Front page 2002. OS XP Pro. I want to
install Front Page 2003 but I understand there might be some problems when it
comes time to install security patches, updates, etc. The Front Page disco
group suggested I ask this group of experts.

Hi, Daytona Steve,

There shouldn't be any problems with patching...(famous last words). When
you use the Office Update site, it detects what software you have installed
and presents updates for what you have.

You can look in the Windows Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs applet to
see what Office family programs are installed. These are what the Office
Update function will look for.

You sometimes need to have original installation CDs for things that are
patched, though this has been somewhat mitigated since Office 2003. But
sometimes Office Update offers patches for things you don't think you still
have (old Office 2000 components, for example), but that still show up in
Add/Remove Programs.

Hope that helps.

Thank you, I'm going to run both Front Page 2002 and 2003 for a while. Just
didn't want to mess up what I have already. I understand I should not
install the shared office components for the 2003 product, correct?

It still shouldn't cause any issues (again, famous last words). But try
without, then you could add them in if you are experiencing any problems.

I frankly wouldn't run both versions at the same time, but it shouldn't
(FLW) hurt anything. Microsoft generally doesn't recommend it, but you may
feel more comfortable that way.

Again, just have all your CDs and installation keys available (always) in
case you need to reinstall something. The worst thing that happens is that
you need to remove Windows Installer information for Office and reinstall.
But that's not usually a huge deal.
