Front Page 2003 - Opening

Y

Yawrood

I would like to know how to open my disk-based web site from 'Start',
'Explore', 'website name' -- -- without opening Front Page first. Every
other document/picture/file I've ever created under My Documents I've been
able to open directly there, without first opening, say Word, or Excel or
Publisher or Adobe.

With Front Page, I seem to have to open Front Page first then, in the
Getting Started pane, going to 'Open', find the name of the web site I want
and opening it there. I WANT to open whichever web site I want from Explore.

Please help.

Then you do exactly the same as you did with word etc .. the path is exactly
the same mine is for example

D:\My Webs\ew-abstract-art\index.html yours will be whatever drive you have
it on ... in whatever folders you have it in .. whatever name you called the
file and then the page..... same as always.

Be advised: If you open and make changes this way .... they might not always
be picked up by the frontpage web ... working in fp is required in order to
use some of the features. If you don't require fp in this way and merely use
a third party ftp and use some other editor (probably a text editor) to make
edits .... you don't need FrontPage... if you employ any of the bots you
will need to work within fp ..... note that in fp you can place the location
of a web in the left hand open site pane through myplaces.

To save your self a lot of headaches, "always" open FrontPage and then open a web to edit.
there's a very specific reason for this, and that is so FrontPage can update the hidden meta data
that is saved by FP so it knows what pages link to what pages, when pages were updated
and much more.

A web site is not like a standalone office document.

Thank you - BUT - what you suggest is EXACTLY what I do and every time -
without fail, the page opens in my browser - not in Front Page.

Y

Yawrood

Thank you Steve - I did not know this. But, suppose you have 4 or 5
disk-based websites. They don't all show up when you open FP first then
select Open from the Getting Started task bar. Since I'm just learning Front
Page, I have 6 or 7 that I've created (not all intentionally) but in the
future I do plan to have several. Will it list every single one? And, if it
doesn't, then I would still need to know the answer to my original question.

Thanks again,

Yes you will see all your websites listed...website folders have a small
blue globe on them.

I'm using FP2003 and have six websites. FP opens with the last site. If you
want to work on a different web, click on File/Open and browsed to the one
you want to open. All my webs are stored in My Documents and every one is
listed when I browsed to the web folder.

Thank you Rob - I am aware that the websites are listed - and I do see them.
However that is/was NOT my question. I want to open the website of my choice
from 'Start', 'Explore', 'My Document', etc - without them opening in the
Explorer browser.

Y

Yawrood

Thank you Ken - and yes, I know about this and am able to do this - FROM
WITHIN FP. But my original question was how to open a website from 'Start',
'Explore', 'My Documents', etc - and have it NOT open in the Explorer
browser.

Try browsing to a web document within a website, right click and choose
"Edit with FrontPage".
This works when using Expression Web - never tried with FrontPage - and
does open the website as well as the page.
Double clicking the web page will always open the page in a browser,
unless you change the file association in Windows Explorer
->Tools->Folder Options->File Types tab. Must be done for all web page
extensions (htm, html, asp, php, aspx, etc.)

yes under right column Open and the bottom of that "More..."

Right click the page and use "Open With". You can also designate the file
association to "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file",
but then **all** web pages (not just yours) will open with FP and not IE.
Right clicking and using "Open With" each time is the way to go.

If you open FrontPage and then click File > Open Web ( open site in FP 2003 )
the open site dialog will list all of the webs that have been created / edited with FrontPage.
Also you will have the options of selecting:
My recent documents
Desktop
My Documents
My Computer and
My network places.

with My network places being the best.
It will display all of your local webs plus all of your published remote webs.

You're absolutely right, unless you were <u>answering the OP's question</u>:

"I would like to know how to open my disk-based web site from 'Start',
'Explore', 'website name' -- -- without opening Front Page first."

T

Thomas A. Rowe

You can't open a web/site just by clicking on a file/page, you have to open the web/site directly in
FP first, then the file/page, otherwise you are just opening a page outside of the web/site.

yes, but then his next question will be; how come my meta data is not
updating.

Point well taken and you're right. I was reading "web page" vice "web site"
in the original post. Thanks for setting it clear.
