Ok but the shared border is greyed out and I did go to authoring to make sure
it was checked. What else am I missing? Does it have to be the index page?
thanks.

No, doesn't have to be the index page, but you do have to have the page you
want shared borders on opened. You will also have a choice to add them to
all pages.

three FrontPage problems

For my old website, I uploaded "Top" and "Left" files using ftp, and
everything worked fine. I just started a new website and I can't find these.
Also, two pages show up in Navigation, but they have no border. Why?

Sounds like you had a "Frames" page, top and left would have been
components of that page, but there's a third "page" holding it all
together - could be this is what's "missing"...the two pages I'd
suspect ARE probably the 'left' and 'top', - but - more info required
for a proper diagnosis :) a URL maybe.- is the new website a new
domain? new ftp location? new folder?

Actually, sounds more like Shared Borders. The files would be in the
_borders folder, which may be hidden. Try Tools | Site Settings |
Advanced | Check the box for "Show hidden files and folders.
