Frontpage 2000 and XP home edition

Jim Goddin

Is there any way I can get Frontpage 2000 working on my
laptop with Windows XP home edition?

When I try to load a web or save a page I get the
error "Cannot open Service.lck for writing"

I think this might be something to do with not having
personal web server or IIS.

I understand XP home doesn't have either PWS or IIS, so is
there any workaround short of buying XP professional?

Thanks very much

Jim

How did you move the web over to this machine, as FP will install and work
just fine under Windows XP Home.

I just copied them over from my old PC.

When I open FP2000 from scratch, and just try to save
anything, i get the can't open service.lck message.

I've looked on MS website and there seems to be something
about adding windows components, but when I go to add the
components specified there is not an option so to do.

I've reinstalled FP2000, tried to save a web to my local
machine and it can't find a local web server.

I never had any problems like this on my old machine with
Win98SE, so I'm a bit confused.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

Jim

Delete the web from you new machine, then if the site is hosted on a server
that has the FP extensions, open the site directly in FP, then File Menu |
Publish Web and enter c:\foldername.

Thanks Thomas

I've tried this loading it from another machine with a
server running, but still no joy I'm afraid.

I can't even save/publish a brand new web as I get the
service.lck message.

I'm really stumped with this one. I can't help wondering
if it's something to do with the lack of IIS or PWS in XP
home.

Thanks

Jim,

The only difference with using Windows XP Home is that you publish to a
disk-based web (c:\webname).

Can you provide the actual steps you are taken, from the point of starting
FP and opening a web

I've found an article which mentions this. Is it relevant?

Not really, unless you copied the web from a machine with a web server to
the Windows XP machine instead of publishing to a disk-based web location.

In some cases, you need to create the folder first in Windows Explorer or My
Computer, then open it in FP, so that it is converted to web before
publishing to it or trying to create new web.

How have you been copying from another machine
- if from a CD remove all read only attributes from all files and folders after the copy
The service.lck error will also come from a read only attribute in the FP web folders

Thanks Thomas, this has sorted the problem. I've deleted
the main folder and re-made it as you suggest and it now
works.

Thanks for your time and assistance.

Regards

Jim
