Frontpage 2002 crashes

J

Jon S.

I've been using FP2002 to maintain several websites. I
can edit, create new pages, upload, etc. websites that
I've created over a year ago.

Now I'm trying to create a new site. I click File-> New
Page or Web, which opens a "New Page or Web" window. If I
select "Empty Web" from under the "New" section, or "Web
Site Templates" from under the "New from template" secion,
FrontPage crashes, displaying the windows "Microsoft
FrontPage has encountered a problem and needs to
close...sorry".

I've tried repairing, re-installing, no difference.
I have MS Office 2000 and all the latest service packs.

Any thoughts?
Jon.

Where are you trying to create the New Web?
- local disc based or server (IIS) w/ FP SE?
- hosted online account under the FP SE?

What about all updates for FP 2002 (MSO 2002) and your OS?

If server based did you check your server logs?
If disc based did you check the wecerr.txt file in your Temp Folder?

Also Have you tried the other usual repairs in the sequence below:
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
3) Run a Repair on IE
(see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=318378 )
4) Install all Service Packs for your OS, IE, MS Office and your Video card
(Windows Update and Office Update sites, plus your video card supplier site)
5) Open FP and Disable or Uninstall any FP Addins,

TRYING to create it on the local disk. But the crash
occurs just a few seconds after clicking on "Empty Web"
or "Web Site Templates". The Templates window never
appears.

It will also crash if I select any other recent template
that's listed (above the "Web Site Templates" folder).

Note that I CAN open a "Blank Page" under the "New"
section, and I can "Choose page..." from under the "New
from existing page" section.

But clicking on templates or Empty Web results in an
immediate crash.

Sounds like corrupt or missing web templates
- believe for FP2002 they should folders be in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033\WEBS

Have you tried a reinstall (custom) and made sure the templates are selected to run from disc

That's where they are. I'll make sure they were re-loaded
when I re-installed, but since I did a clean re-install I
suspect they were reloaded. I've also tried downloading
templates from Microsoft website, and put them in the same
place. Also, not that this crash is not specific to
openning Templates... opening an Empty Web causes the same
crash.

Empty Web is also a Template in the folder named empty.tem

Try removing the templates you downloaded there
- they should be put in
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\FrontPage\Webs

Oddly enough, when I started composing a reply to this
thread, I opened FrontPage so I could refer to the button
labels, but I inadvertently launched a 2nd copy. I
clicked on Templates, and the Template window appeared -
no crash. It went through the wizard properly. So for
now at least, I'm up and running.

This problem happened before I downloaded the webs I
mentioned, but I'll try your suggestion.

Another "solution" was to create the web from templates on
another PC, then move the folder over. Hardly a "fix"
Thanks,
Jon.

Empty Web is also a Template in the folder named empty.tem

Try removing the templates you downloaded there
- they should be put in
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\FrontPage\Webs
