Frontpage 2003 installed on Windows 7 problem

D

David

Help! I have a new HP laptop with windows 7. From years ago I've installed
successfully my Frontpage 2003 CD. After getting fairly along with building
a new web site, first my pictures being previewed in a browser were not
where they were in frontpage. In a disscussion group & read about trouble
with Java scripts so I deleted audio I had put in from MS clip art. Still
same problem but perhaps now worse for when I correctly put the photos in
place in frontpage they continue to end up changing to a different page, not
where I want them. In saving the changes I've tried the set the change
button & answered both ways, overwriting or direct to existing file, whatever
that means?????

On first reading your question my reaction was the same as Rob's - I did not
understand it. But these are answers to my interpretation.

"In saving the changes I've tried the set the change
button & answered both ways, overwriting or direct to existing file"

Is this the Import Images dialogue? Always import your images into the web
site BEFORE inserting them on pages, and always insert images that are
already in your web site.

As for rendering problems ("my pictures being previewed in a browser were
not where they were in frontpage") - these cannot be diagnosed without
seeing the page, by my guess would be the mis-use of Absolute Positioning.
Use floats and margins, or even tables, not Absolute Positioning.

Java or JavaScript? These are two very different animals. And what have
either of these to do with images or audio? There is no connection - unless
you are doing something not mentioned in the question.

Clip art should be converted to .gif images, not a substitute for
photographs. And I fail to see how an image can change to a different page -
again, is there something you are not telling us?

FrontPage 2003 has *serious* problems with Windows 7. Especially if
you want to develop against the local webserver using FrontPage Server
Extensions (FPSE). Do yourself a huge favor, and become familiar with
XP Mode.

That's the only way I've found to get FP03 to run as well as it did on
XP. Isn't orphaned software fun? :-/

Thanks for your help..... I guess I should just stick with my old
computer(XP) with my web site in frontpage.

Thanks for your reply. Please consider I'm just an old guy trying to live in
this geek world. I've had my own web site published for years though. My
first was built in Publisher '97. My current site was built with frontpage
'03 with my old computer with XP. So now I have a new computer that came
with Windows 7, I thought I was moving ahead? I don't know html & have
always just added text & pictures to the software & then uploaded the site.
Now the problem is I have the pages set up in Frontpage '03. At first when I
previewed the pages in a browser the pictures were not where I had put them
in frontpage??? They had switched from one page to another. Now even as I'm
attempting to place the pictures in my frontpage pages where I want them;
they switch places all by themselves. These pictures I have put into my
computer from my camera. When I go to put them in a web page in Frontpage, I
click my way from, insert picture from a file, my desktop to Libraries to
pictures then to the individual file & picture. Then I greatly reduce them,
then resample them & when I go to save the page I get a window about saving
embedded files. At first I simply answered the box by clicking, "OK." Then
I started having problems so I first then clicked in that save embedded files
window the, "set action" button. That then gave me 2 options one to
overwrite the picture & the other to redirect the picture. It used the term
"existing" & I have no clue which one was the existing. I hope I've
explained myself better. I'll await your replly. Thanks

The correct way to insert images in FrontPage:

1) Resize the according on your computer with a third party image program,
such as Irfanview.

2) With your FP web open on your local computer, File | Import the pictures
from your hard drive into a folder on your web.

3) Then, File | Insert the pictures onto your pages from the folder in
FrontPage.

4) Use tables to layout your pages, inserting the pictures into the cells.

Thanks for your reply. First see my reply to the comment from Rob &
hopefully you'll understand my problem better. The thing about Java or Java
script I got from reading through this disscussion group. As stated before
I'm just an old guy trying my best to live with all this techology. I don't
really know what either java term means. Somehow though I've been a
successful web publisher for over 13 years & don't know html or all the ways
you have told me to put pictures in frontpage. The last post makes me think
I should forget frontpage '03 in my windows 7 computer. Maybe I should
download the free Sharepoint to build a site with this computer. I still
have my old computer with XP & frontpage '03 & I'm starting to think that is
the best & most successful match. I look forward to your reply. Thanks

Well, I don't mean to put a damper on things, but yeah. If you want to
remain productive, keeping the old system running - for now - is the
shortest path there.

Again, though, I'd urge you to become familiar with running XP within
Windows 7. (See the link I offered above.) That gives you "the best
of both worlds." I'm an Olde Fart too. Totally skipped Vista, but I
do think W7 has good things to offer. Providing the XP Mode allows you
to make the transition far more gracefully than otherwise.

Sorry. "according" should be "image". Google for Irfanview. It's free. Start
using tables to eliminate your problem of the images moving around on the
page.

David brought next idea :

Hmmmm, as I re-examine my advice, I see on the page I pointed to that
Microsoft says only folks who have the Professional version of Windows
7 are eligible for that download. (Curse them, anyway, huh?!) Given
you said W7 came on a machine you bought, I kind of expect you have the
Home version, eh? That means this isn't as good an idea as I first
imagined. You can still use VirtualPC 2007, but that's nowhere near as
well integrated.

I'm sorry...
