FrontPage 2003 on W2K Server Question

K

Kristen Wagner

TIA for any advice you can give,

We are looking at upgrading FP 2000 to FP 2003 in order to take advantage of
some of its new features--for example, file upload from a form. However, we
are running W2K Server, not 2003. We have a number of pages for which SQL
Server 2000 is a back end. My understanding is that if we use FP 2003 on a
W2K server we forego a lot of its functionality because FP2003 relies on
SharePoint Services for database interactivity, which we won't have, instead
of FP Extensions --is this correct?

Thanks,
Kristen Wagner

Hi Kristen,

FP 2003 has the ability to connect and work with SharePoint web sites, yes.
However, it is hardly limited to SharePoint web sites. It can actually work
with any kind of web site, and has functionality for working with databases
either through SharePoint, or using ASP or ASP.Net.

Thanks, Kevin. I was basing my observations on Microsoft's own comparison
chart of the features available with FP2003 depending on what else is
installed:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/frontpage/prodinfo/servers.mspx

The latest version of FP Server Extensions we have installed is 2000, of
course. I don't want to have to purchase *other* software in order to take
advantage of FP2003's basic capabilities.

Hi Kevin,

It appears that you can't take advantage of the File Upload feature if you
are running Frontpage 2000 Server Extensions.

That is correct.

Tom,

What would have been helpful to know is that the Frontpage 2002 extensions
are available for downloading free of charge. Now that I've installed them I
can take advantage of the features I was missing.

It didn't appear that you were asking about downloading them.

Now that you have, make sure you also download and install all the upgrades

Thanks, Tom. Perhaps my next question should occur as a new thread, but here
goes:

I can insert a file upload form into my page and configure it to point to a
new folder. However, when I select the properties for the new folder (or any
other folder) in View-->Folders, all of the checkboxes are grayed out. I am
working on my own server, running W2K Professional, and I am logged in with
administrator rights. I can't find anything in the KB.

Thanks for your help,
Kristen Wagner

But, do you actually host the web on a remote server, and publish from your
Win2K Pro?

The host must first of all allow the file upload. Then, you must open the
remote site via FP and set the folder permissions there, unless the host
doesn't allow it.

Actually, I am running a development server--IIS5/FP2002 Extensions/W2KPro.
Eventually I will transfer to the remote server, but for now I am doing
everything locally. I've never had a problem with this in the past...

I am assuming that the issue here is FP not having permission to change
folder attributes...where do I configure that?
