FrontPage ftp stopped working since IE7

Since updating IE7 and associated achnges it makes, one of my websites
refuses to update correctly. It aborts the ftp and closes FrontPage with the
following error in the event viewer:
Date xxxxxx Source: Microsoft Office 11
Time xxxxxxx Category: None
Type: Error Event ID 1000
User N/A
Computer xxxxxxx

Faulting application frontpg.exe, version 11.0.6552.0, stamp 424b714f,
faulting module wininet.dll, version 7.0.5730.11, stamp 454283b4, debug? 0,
fault address 0x00001a35.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. (Doesn't provide any help)

I'm running XP Home with all updates and service packs known to me, and auto
updates turned on of course... But how come the browser update has affected
another Microsoft Application so badly? Did no one Beta this? I am completely
stuck, and frightened that restoring an earlier point will get me in a worse
situation if that doesn't work correctly (I've never needed to before, and
shouldn't have needed to now surely?).

Thanks for the reply Steve.
I did this yesterday. Sadly it didn't resolve it.
I am thrilled to find someone who gives a damn though! :)
So any other thoughts please let me know as I am stuffed right now!
Cheers, David

Yes... I've done a lot of searching and found "How to configure Internet
Explorer to use both the FTP PORT mode and the FTP PASV mode..." under Server
2003 kb articles.

It is still set to this, despite not resolving it.

I was a little concerned (and lost) when it came to the section about:

"Firewall administrators may not want to use Passive mode FTP servers
because the FTP server can open any ephemeral port number. Although Microsoft
Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 and IIS 5.0 use the default ephemeral
port range of 1024 through 5000, many FTP servers are configured with an
ephemeral port range of 1024 through 65535. Firewall configurations that
allow full access to all ephemeral ports for unsolicited connections may be
considered unsecured.

Don't know what all that means frankly, but as I say it is still set to
Passive FTP

Actually, I don't think you're alone in this, but I do think it's more of a
general issue. All my publishing applications FP, Dreamweaver, WS_FTP,
Visual Studio, all died. The only thing I could do was turn off my firewall
in Win XP (not recommended unless you have another firewall as I have a
hardware one as well). It eventually started back up again, but I have no
idea why. I'm unsure if there was something I updated in windowsupdate or
not so I'm sorry I can't say what it was. You may want to check around the
IE newsgroups to see who else has had this problem as I know you're not
alone in this.

Thanks Mark. It definitely happned the day after IE7, but I believe there may
have been an "auto" update too the same day. I have not been able to update
since Nov 1st. I did a scout around newsgroups and found one other post, but
with no responses. This has been the most promising route (hopefully) so far.
wininet.dll has been subject to similar issues in the past I have also found.
Does it come with FP or with IE?
As detect and repair did't work, would wininet.dll have been modified via IE7?

I'm stunned this can happen though after all the beta testing etc!

Cheers, David

As everything has gone quiet on this one, I have opened the question up to
the You Tube community, to se if I can get an answer in that part of the
virtual world...

wininet.dll is a system library that is used to do all sorts of
internet-related activities by the OS. IE and other programs make calls to
it to perform certain functions. It could have been modified by IE, though
I'm unsure. Unfortunately, I can't think of what I did to get FTP and other
publishing to work again. I would open my Firewall up for long enough to
publish, then I would toy with adding some additional programs to the list
of programs that had exceptions to the firewall and could communicate when
it was on.

While I'm thinking of it, something to try would be to go through the list
of programs that are an exception to the firewall rule. If you go to Control
Panel | Network Connections | Right-click on your internet connection,
choose the Advanced tab, then the Windows Firewall Settings button, then
Exceptions to bring up the list of exception programs. What you may try is
going through the list for any programs that could be in there, but maybe
aren't on the computer anymore. I did click a few off my list now that I
think of it and wonder if that had anything to do with it. Who knows, it's
worth a try though.

I'd first turn off the firewall entirely and try ftp, if ftp works then dig
into the firewall settings.

I'm back... I had to go to bed - it was about 1.30am...

Windows Firewall is off
I turned off Norton Security also for my last attempt - no luck, same crash.
I'm alsmost worried I shall leave changes that didn't work in place an
compromise the rest of the system - especially as everything else seems to
work OK.
I believe I have a hard firewall through my wireless router but I'm no
expert here as after the initial setup and excryption settings about 2yrs ago
I haven't altered that, as it has worked perfectly!

Interestingly I CAN drag and drop single files to ftp to the website within
FrontPage.
It is only when I get FrontPage to do a normal "Publish" that this happens.
However due to the dynamics of menus and borders etc this is not a real
option.

I firmly believe now it must be something that has changed in the updates.

I have various versions of wininet.dll on my system with 'dates modified' as
follows:
WININET.DLL in C:\I386 (In capital letters) dated 18/08/2001 (UK date format)
Various ones dating from 29/08/2002 through to 23/06/2006 (coloured blue)
from NtServicePackUninstall$, various NtUninstallKBxxxxxx$, and the last in
C:\Windows\ie7 <<< Oh Yes, the one dated 23/06/2006
Then the following ones:
wininet.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 dated 27/10/2006
wininet.dll C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 dated 04/08/2004
wininet.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE dated 27/10/2006
wininet.dll.mui C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\en-US dated 17/10/2006
wininet.dll C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB834707\SP2QFE - 29/09/2004
wininet.dll C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB867282\SP2QFE - 27/01/2005
wininet.dll C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB883939\SP2QFE - 02/052005
wininet.dll C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB890923\SP2QFE - 10/03/2005
wininet.dll C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB896688\SP2QFE - 02/09/2005
wininet.dll C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB896727\SP2QFE - 03/07/2005
wininet.dll C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB905915\SP2QFE - 21/10/2005
wininet.dll C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB912812\SP2QFE - 04/03/2006
wininet.dll C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB916281\SP2QFE - 10/05/2006
wininet.dll C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB918889\SP2QFE - 23/06/2006

Ar these all needed?
Are there any clues after keying all these in by hand :) ?

Yours (still stuffed)

Hi Steve,

Any more thoughts since yesterday?
I have given more detail in the reply to Mark Fitzpatrick a couple of
messages below.

I am still completely stuck.
Does Microsoft acknowledge the issue?
Is someone looking at it?

What do I do next?

I couldn't wait any longer as I need to do some work, so I decided to do a
system restore.

I tried three restore points before my installing IE7 on 2nd November (2 on
1st November and 1 on 31st October). None of them would restore.

31st Oct was a formal System Restore point, but it came back and said:
"Your Computer cannot be restored to 31st October 2006 System Checkpoint, No
Changes have been made to your computer."

As this was my third attempt I suppose I have to give up on this "solution"
too?
