FrontPage offering false Arial fonts

I use Arial almost exclusively in my web pages, and have been doing so in
FrontPage for several years. For the last couple of years, I've been using
FP2003.

Recently, I've had trouble with the Arial font not being Arial. Only in
FrontPage do I have a default Arial that shows up as a serif. Everyone knows
that Arial is not a serif font. And yet there it is.

It's listed as: Arial (serif) in the FrontPage fonts list. It wasn't
there before.

There is also an Arial (fantasy) and an Arial (sanserif).

And if I go high enough up on the list, I can finally find a real Arial
that's just Arial.

I've always been able to highlight a section of text and select "Arial" and
keep going. But not now. Simply selecting Arial as my font does nothing. I
have to go in and force the selection, either by hand coding, or by going
through the list (right clicking and choosing "font…" and then working my way
up the list – the default is always "Arial(serif)" ).

This has only become a problem recently, that the default "Arial" in
FrontPage is no longer really Arial at all.

I changed out the fonts (all except Unicode) in my font folder, and it
changes nothing.

Has anyone been able to successfully fix this problem?

My next step is to reinstall FrontPage and see if that changes anything.

Try using CSS to set your fonts, for a basic setting, use the following, put
it in the <head> of your page.

<style>
body
{ font-face: arial; size:10pt; }

</style>

If it's a FP 2003 bug, why don't it show up on my screen? Or everyone
else's screen that uses FP 2003? It sure as heck sounds like someone
has clicked on the wrong email or website and loaded something they
didn't expect, or want.

I let MS do auto updates, so Word and FP software has the latest
updates, and no such font shows up in either. I DO NOT click on emails
I don't know, especially ones with attachments. I still suspect that,
or clicking to let some site download a font, is the source of the bad
font.

Thanks.

Yes, I've been able to work around it, but setting the font isn't as
convenient as it once was.

As for someone's suggestion that it is a viral problem, that's possible. I
don't download fonts or visit questionable websites. I run Symantec's AV and
use a good firewall. I've gone through every file, checking for viruses,
and, as I noted earlier, I've replaced the fonts themselves.

It only shows in FrontPage. It doesn't come up in Design view, in the box
at the top of the screen, but only in the "format fonts" list.

Whatever it is, it's annoying. Anyway, thanks, all, for the helpful
comments and ideas.

Do you have FP set to display the font name in the actual font? If yes, try disabling that.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Are you referring to the window in
design mode? I've changed that back and forth to Times New Roman, etc.
Nothing changes, yet. I'm dragging my feet on reinstalling FP, hoping that
I'll stumble onto the problem.

I've only seen the problem in FP 2003. I also run it on a desktop at home,
and it's there, as well. But I run FP 2000 on a different machine at work,
and the problem doesn't show up.

I do have auto updates, and Service packs etc. and I don't accept any email
that I don't expect or know. I'm very paranoid about scripts and etc. And I
don't click on attachments.

But who knows? Things happen.

I just did a new search on my computer and found the 5 versions of
Ariel above, and all were listed in Front Page 2003. On my website, I
use 3 different fonts, Ariel, Veranda, & Times New Roman. I just
checked about 40 pages, some that were updated in the last 2 days, and
none of the fonts, including the Ariel fonts had changed to Ariel
sans-serif. Again, my conclusion is, you caught a hick-up somewhere. I
did an extensive search and could not find this problem listed
anywhere.

I'd say it's time to do a through check for mal-ware, then uninstall
FP and install again.

Thanks, Tom.

Sounds like you also have a mild version of what I'm having, since Arial
(sans serif) and Arial (fantasy) don't show up in any official documentation
that I've seen from Office 2003 or FP 2003. One of my other computers
running FP shows only those two fonts, and still another system shows only
the regular Arial fonts that are actually installed on the computer.

But I do appreciate your effort and time you've taken to look for answers.

As for an earlier question, about showing the font as the actual font (in
Design View listing box), I've toggled that, and it makes no difference. The
"format font" listing (when I right-click on selected text) still defaults to
Arial (serif).

It's forcing me to do more actual programming, which is painful ('cause I'm
lazy), but not all bad.
