Frontpage Virus?

Janna Johnson

Hello! I need some help. On my husband's computer we have an odd problem.

None of our Microsoft products (office, IE, any office files, etc) will
open. Instead it comes up with a window that says 'Trying to configure
Microsoft Office Professional with Front Page". and It has a cancel button.
You can cancel it but it comes right back up.

In my program folder in the windows directory, it has an extra folder
entitled 'microsoft frontpage'. Inside that folder is another named 'verison
3.0' and inside taht folder is another named 'bin'. They look bad because
there is an actual 'Microsoft Office" that has always been there. Now when
I try to delete these strange looking folders it tells me it cannot delete
them because they are in use. I've tried cutting off the process in task
manager and it still won't let you delete them. I cannot rename them, move
them, or take the read-only lock off.

I have run virus scan 6 or 8 times and it doesn't seem to be picking it up.
I've run spybot also.

Not sure what I am missing!

Please help!
THanks!

This is not a virus, the folder is installed and used by Windows, and you can not delete it. It has
nothing to do with the regular FP application that you have to purchase.

Ok So if that isn't a bad file. What is making my programs junked up?
I've gotten another MS Office disk and tried to run it and it comes up with
the same message. I've tried to deinstall MS Office all together and it won't
even deisntall. Keeps coming up with 'trying to configure MS Office
Professional With Frontpage."

did you use system restore?
if the program is installed, when you put the CD in, it gives an option to
repair it?
to uninstall or delete files manually (not recommended) you may have to
disable it from starting in msconfig first, then run the uninstall?
I am not an expert by any means but those are what I would try first.

I have no idea, as I have never had any problem installing Office application. Do you have the
original CDs for Microsoft Office Professional with Front Page, as that is what you must insert in
order to by this message or you will need to un-install it from add/remove, If the folder has been
deleted, then you would have to re-install it and then un-install.

Janna, I know this is a stupid question, but did you try all these things in
one sitting, in other words has the computer been turned off & re-booted
since you noticed the problem? Sometimes I wrestle with a problem only to
find it has corrected itself when I turn on the computer the next day.

Since I'm not real good at troubleshooting, I too would do a system restore,
if that option is avalable to you. That's not in FP, it's the whole
computer, so look for it in your help & support menu.

Janna,

It sounds like there is a corrupted installer file on the
computer.
The best way to get rid of it is going to be to reinstall
the "Microsoft Office Professional with Front Page".

The folder you found is actually not part of Office or
FrontPage, but rather a part of Windows itself, for web
publishing applications

I have been told to run "detect and repair" from the Help button at top when
FP goes off on a tangent and then do as the dollmaker said, "restart you
computer."

I've seen in the past web input fields that included a mini text editor for
input into that field and when the data was submitted, the formatting went
with it (in html I assume) (This would be found in an admin section of the
site on an editor/add page)
