Frozen Laptop!!

When starting up my lap top (Windows ME)it goes as far as the desktop,
then the mouse pointer changes from the normal arrow to an arrow with
what looks like the Windows logo underneath. As soon as I left click
on anything the lap top freezes - can't do CRTL ALT,DEL either. Any
ideas?
