Frustrating Printing Problem

This is a new computer (Windows XP) and Word 2002 (as part of Works Suite):

When I print a document with an envelope attached, the envelope prints fine,
but the document prints as if it were in two columns, with the same text (cut
off, of course) in both columns.
When I try printing only the document (s2) the same thing happens. But if I
delete the envelope, the document prints fine.
The page layout view and the print preview both show envelope and document
perfectly proportioned.
An HP tech concluded, after an hour, that the printer is not capable of
printing documents with attached envelopes (it doesn't have the drivers) and
suggested as a "workaround" that I always delete envelopes before printing
documents.
I used another HP Deskjet printer for eight years without having this problem,
so I don't buy her answer.
The printer has an envelope feeder on top of the paper tray, so clearly it is
intended to print envelopes and documents at a single pass.
Is this possibly a bug in Word 2002?
Is there anything I can do with regard to formatting, etc., that might make
this function work?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
