Frustration: changes to Normal don't stick!

I was recently upgraded from Windows / Word 2000 to Windows / Word XP. I
was able to bring my previous Normal.dot over, with all my buttons and
macros. Since then, though, I have been unable to add a button, even though
the macro code is there, and add an Add-In, and have these changes stick
from one instance to the next! I close Word and lose these changes! I
tried opening Normal itself rather than just a blank document and making the
changes - still no joy!

Any suggestions? Would permissions settings have anything to do with this?

Thanks, Suzanne. Yes, we do have Adobe Reader 7.0.5 installed, so that may
indeed be the issue. I'm assuming that if the registry is edited to prevent
the COM add-in from loading, that does not prevent the Reader from being
used if an Adobe document is opened? it only prevents the add-in from
interacting with Word?

Adobe Reader is not the issue, just Acrobat, so you'll have to look
elsewhere for the problem. The Shift+File | Save All workaround will still
work regardless of what is causing the problem.

Well, I got the macro and button to stick, but the add-in won't! I add it
under Tools>>Templates and Add-Ins. But I can't see it using the Add-In
Manager in the VBE. Should I?

If you want an add-in always to be present in Word, it should be stored in
Word's Startup folder.

Thanks for sticking with this for a bit, Suzanne. I have the Add-In (it's a
Google Search Add-In written by Ron DeBruin) in the same folder as Normal.
I can add it through Tools>>Templates and Add-Ins as described before, and
do a Shift + Save All - but when I close and reopen, it's listed under
Tools>>Templates and Add-Ins, but not checked. Is there a way to resolve
this?

Add-ins that are not in Word's Startup folder are not loaded at startup and
will have to be added manually. If you want it to load every time you start
Word, you have to put it in Word's Startup folder.

Move the add-in from the User templates folder to the Word startup folder,
the location of which is defined at tools > options > file locations >
startup.
