Frustration trying to attach a new template to an existing document - Please help

Keith Brickey

After attaching a new template to a document, the sytles in the new template
are still not shown in the document style list. If I use the Style Organizer
to transfer individual styles from the template into the document, the style
names from the new template seem to be placed in the document; however the
formatting is not the same as in the new template. Why would anyone want to
attach a new template if they would not be able to use the styles in the new
template. Does anyone understand Microsoft's use of styles and templates
well enough to explain it, or are the style and template features simply
defective????

Thanks,

Keith

Must be something else going wrong here. Attaching a template to a document
normally DOES make the styles in the template available. Copying styles
using the organizer also makes the styles available, but does not
automatically re-format paragraphs that use the style.

The Styles list on the Formatting toolbar by default shows only the styles
in use. If there are styles that haven't been used in the document (a good
bet if they weren't previously available), then they won't be displayed. If
you press Shift while clicking on the down arrow, all styles will be
displayed, or you can see the entire list in the Format | Style dialog. In
Word 2002, if you select Custom at the bottom of the Styles and Formatting
task pane, you can custom-tailor the appearance of the Styles list.
