FSPE What is it, do I have to pay for it.

Is this something I get from my host, say Charter? How do I get it? And do I
have to pay for it?

FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) - your host may or may not provide them.
Look in the support section of your host or even the FAQs to see if they
provided them. Not all web hosts provide them.

In regards to Publisher webs, FPSE are the default form handlers. You can
use other form handler scripts if your host provides them by changing the
form properties - right click the Submit button and choose "use a program
from my ISP" and point the "Action" toward the host form handler script.

If you use FPSE you must use HTTP uploading vs. FTP or you will corrupt the
FPSE.

I wanted to try to create a form in publisher to see how it works. As I may
have a need in the future to use one.

You would do well to try to explain that statement, as it looks like
superstitious nonsense from here.

Apart from that, Frontpage Server Extensions have been obsolete for several
years and are neither supplied with current products or supported by MS,
which is why few hosting providers continue to install them. They really
should not be used if you are building a new web site. (And neither, for
that matter, should MS Publisher).

It probably depends on what you mean by 'supported'. 'Mainstream' (i.e.
free) support from Microsoft ended in 2006. They no longer supply the
product, but a version which works on Windows 2008/Vista with some
limitations is available from a third party, but this may not continue for
much longer.

the third party is the actual party that originally supplied the fpse since
the beginning (ready to run - rtr) when frontpage was owned by Vermeer - I
believe that's the history. It probably will continue for a while since (I
think) they're still used by SharePoint Designer.
