FTP .. Publish to Web

M

Miguel

Novice here - I have a web site completed and I'm simply trying to publish it
to the web. When the ADD/MODIFY option comes up for FTP I am using
ftp.domainname.com (the correct one) proper user name and password, etc. - I
click on ADD so I don't have to do this every time.

Here's the problem - it creates a folder BUT the folder is named:
FTP://FTP.DOMAINNAME.COM - so when I double click on it to publish to the
web I get an error which states "The folder "ftp://ftp.domainname.com isn't
accessible. The folder may be in an unavailable location, protected with a
password, or the filename contains a / or \."

What in the world? The filename is 'index.html' .. I'm completely lost here
and the web hosting provider doesn't provide Publisher assistance. Any help
would be appreciated very much. Thank you

Miguel,

1) Download a FTP program - a google search will turn up several free ones.

2) Don't name your server ftp.domainname.com, simply domainname.com.
However, lots of servers have a special folder to upload files to:
httpdocs/
public_html/
public_docs/
home/

etc.

And if you are using AOL or certain other hosts, it can get even worse.

In addition to what Mike suggested, you might find it helpful to read David
Bartosik's article: "How to trouble-shoot Publisher web upload issues " and
the article about using FTP protocol:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/articles/category/1921.aspx

If you are using a form in your site, then also review HTTP protocol.

If you have further issues, then you might read through the posts on the
microsoft.public.publisher.webdesign and post follow up questions there.
