Is publishing from front page using server extensions
the same as ftp
I undertand that widows explorer can publish from my PC to a server by
typing in FTP://
Does that mean that paid ftp services (cute, etc.) are no longer necessary?

No. Publishing via FTP is different than publishing with the FP server
extensions.
FTP paid services are necessary, unless you have a host that doesn't charge
for them.

Why use such programs if windows explorer or FP extensions work just as well

Why are they necessary? I have been using FP extensions for 2 years without

FTP programs aren't necessary if you're publishing using extensions and http:// in
FrontPage.

Actually they aren't necessary at all because you can publish using FTP with FrontPage
providing the server does "not" have extensions installed.

Additionally, you can open an ftp capable domain in Internet Explorer using
ftp://domainname.com and drag and drop files to and from the server.

You can also ftp from a command window.

They aren't necessary. In fact using them to upload instead of Publishing
through FP to an FP extended web will break the extensions.

But, some people use them on non-extended webs or subwebs/sites of a FP
extended web. You can just as well use the ftp client _built into IE
browser_ as well.

In the past, I have had to search for free FTP programs to upload files to
FTP servers w/o FP extensions, including my personal website (below) and a
site which manages photos and also uses FTP for upload.

Now I don't have to worry. I can do it all from Internet Explorer, which
actually opens as another folder in Windows Explorer - great !!
Of course, the FTP option in FrontPage is also great as it checks that the
on-line web is synchronised with the disk web.

But I did find when opening the server in IE that it is named
ftp://ftp.homemail.com.au/ (i.e. there is an extra "ftp." in the name), but
I suppose this may vary from server to server.

OK, newbie here. I've wet my feet on my first hobby web site at
www.jacnsue.com and have been using the method described below (drop and drag
to an ftp) to load content. What advantage will I gain, if any, by switching
to Publish from FP. I'm using godaddy and have FP Extensions installed. I'm
learning as I go, but since I taught myself Access well enough to write the
contract managment program my health care corporate employer uses, I figure I
can learn FP

Helpful info. My host is GoDaddy and the control panel gives me an
opportunity to uninstall then reinstall the FP extensions. Please bear with
me if these sound like "dumb" questions:

Do I have to publish the whole web or can I just publish one page (to try it
out)? Do I publish to the ftp site for my web or directly to the http?

Publish by http: with the server extensions installed or by FTP without the
server extensions.

You can publish the whole site, or individual files.
