Full justification problem

L. Palmer

Hi,

We are using Word 2000 in conjunction with a reference
managing program called EndNotes 5.0. When we insert a
citation into our Word document, a superscript reference
number is inserted at that particular point. In some
cases, we might cite multiple (2-15) references.

Our problem? We have set our Word document to be full
justified. This, in turn, seems to be affecting our
superscript reference numbers. Sometimes they are close
together...and other times they are spread far apart. (We
are assuming Word is recognizing the "," between reference
numbers...and thus allowing the justification to occur.)

We would like our reference numbers to be kept together,
as if it was a single word (so to speak). Is there a way
to turn off the justification for superscript text? Or
perhaps modifiy the justification rules with respect to
commas?

Thanks!

Word justification algorithm is cludgy at the best of times. It's
typographically abominable, and on some measures it reduces readability.

However, to deal with your problem: the separation between the superscripts
will be not the comma, but the space after each comma. Try replacing these
spaces with non-breaking spaces (ctrl-shift-space). The width of these is
not changed when you justify.
