Full or Upgrade, Confused!!

R

Roberta J Smith

Okay, here it is. I have Students Office on my daughters laptop and on my
desktop I have proffessional, which will not verify, I bought it second hand,
so I cannot update programs. I want to buy Business Office 2007. What do I
buy? Full or Upgrade? And can I upgrade Business on pro & students? SO
CONFUSED!!!!

No, the Students and Teachers Edition is not a qualifying product for the
upgrade. You need full version. And since the desktop is yours and the
laptop is your daughter's, you need two copies if you're looking at
upgrading both computers.

I have been given to understand that *any* Office 2003 or Office XP version
of Office is in the Office 2007 upgrade path...

See http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/FX101754511033.aspx#1

For example:

For "Microsoft Office Standard 2007" the "Qualifying Products for Upgrade"
are "Microsoft Works 6.0–10; Microsoft Works suite 2000–2006 or later; any
2000–2007 Microsoft Office program or suite; any Microsoft Office XP suite."

Except folks here have complained that the STE of Office will not qualify for the upgrade to Office 2007, any version.

Microsoft is in the process of correcting that site - and that is directly
from a Microsoft employee. The STE is *not* a qualifying product.

If I buy an Office 2007 uprade before the "process of correcting that site"
is completed, will the STE still be a qualifying product?

I don't work for Microsoft, and I ain't no lawyer. But the contract
that you implicitly agree to when you use the Office Online service says:

"You may only use the service if you agree to these terms. If you do not
agree, do not use the service. This contract limits our liability and
disclaims warranties for the service to the maximum extent permitted by
law. This contract also requires you to indemnify us. Please read these
sections of the contract carefully...

"Microsoft makes no guarantee about the reliability and accuracy of the
service or the results obtained from the service... We provide the
service 'as-is,' 'with all faults' and 'as available.' You bear the risk
of using it. To the extent permitted by law, we exclude any implied
warranties or conditions including those of merchantability, fitness for
a particular purpose, workmanlike effort, non-infringement, and
satisfactory quality...

"You agree to defend, indemnify and hold the Microsoft parties harmless
from and against any and all claims, losses, liability, costs, and
expenses (including attorneys' fees) arising from your use of the
service..."

Both the laptop and the desktop our mine, registered in my name, but my
daughter used it for school and now I have it. Even if it was my daughter
and one was mine why would I have to buy 2? I thought there was 3 downloads
per CD.

Students and Teachers and the new Home and Students edition allow that, not
the other suites. The license says:
"a. Licensed Device. You may install and use one copy of the software on
the licensed device.
b. Portable Device. You may install another copy on a portable device for
use by the single primary user of the licensed device."

It doesn't say who owns it. It states the primary user of the laptop.

I didn't write the license, I'm not a Microsoft employee, and I'm not a
lawyer but it's phrased clearly enough. You need two licenses.
