full stops in email address causes problems

I have a user who requests an email address with full stops like so ..

user.name1.name2.domain.com

When he sends email to gmail accounts it is delivered ( or other d omains)
however when it is sent to his office domain in Europe ( he's in Asia) it is
returned 'user unknown'.

Is it the full stops ( periods for Americans ) which is causing the
problem
