FULL version only temporary-Launch 2007 Resource kit

T

Trader Chuck

I attended the program and received the kit, both of which promised a full
version of Office Professional 2007 et al. I downloaded it online as
instructed and installed it using the key supplied with the kit also as
instructed. It is functioning OK.

I now get a notice that my trial version is expiring.

How do I correct this so that it is recognized as a full version?

Thanks

H

Herb Tyson [MVP]

Was a separate trial version installed on your computer at the time you
installed using the launch kit key? If so, and if you didn't remove it,
then it's likely that it's the trial version that's expiring... not the
version you activated using the launch kit key.

T

Trader Chuck

Thanks for the reply.

There was no trial version installed. The last office product was Office
2002 standard. If I remember correctly I uninstalled it first.

What's the next step?

I contacted MS customer service and they wanted to turn it into a tech
support issue-I didn't feel that was deserved.

T

Trader Chuck

Again, THANKS

Belarc reports the same key as on the launch kit.

This confirms what I had suspected since my last post. I reviewed KB927756
and when I found nothing there worked and by careful reading I thought they
were saying that the warning would come up in the program. I received an
email from Digital River telling me that my time was about to expire and was
trying to sell me a new key. At that time I believed it enough to suspect I
had a problem and wanted it resolved before the program was crippled. I now
think that email was deceptive and am wondering how many others are caught up
in that and possibly buying a key.

Your advice confirms to me that I have no problem beyond believing the email.

Again, thanks.

If MS reads this I suggest stop allowing sending out such deceptive emails,
or at the least include an explanation and a simple way to verify if the
email is true or not.

To clarify, you thought Office 2007 was about to expire due to an email you
received and the email was sent on behalf of Microsoft (or something like
that)? If that's the case then that's not good.

Would you mind sending me a copy of the email? Remove "NoSpam4Me" to obtain
a valid email address: (e-mail address removed) Microsoft doesn't read
these newsgroups but I'd like to pass this information on in the event they
aren't aware of this occurring.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email cannot be acknowledged.

I attempted to send you that mail. For some reason a test forwarding to my
self produced only blank pages but a copy/paste sent to myself came through
as an attachment so I sent that to you.

Thanks for the input.

I too agree that something is very wrong with this happening.

Ah. When you said you received a "notice", I assumed that you meant it was a
popup of some kind from Office 2007 itself. I had no idea it was an email.
I've never heard of Digital River. HOWEVER... Using "The Google," I see now
that Digital River make a classic menus add-in tool for several Office 2007
applications. I suspect that you installed the add-in, and it is the add-in
that is expiring.

I suspect that there is some confusion here. Check the notice again. Does it
say that Office is expiring... or does it say that the classic menu tools
add-in is expiring?

Cheers,

Digital River doesn't make that add-in. Digital River is a huge company
that serves as reseller/distributor of software. E.g., I sell my add-in
via share-it, which is a subsidiary of Digital River.

Ah. I didn't follow the link--just surmised from The Google's summary.
However, the fact remains that it's more than likely that the notice Trader
Chuck is seeing isn't about Office, but about the add-in.

Ah. It's a shotgun approach. They're betting that this will apply to a
number of people, and that the people to whom it doesn't apply will:

a) realize that, and ignore it, after cursing the sender (that's what I
would do),

b) not realize it, panic, do some research, and then curse the sender (which
is what you're doing), or

c) not realize it, and re-purchase Office 2007, later discover their error,
and (you guessed it), curse the sender.

<sigh>

Vespasian

Hello,

I was looking to see what type of license comes with the Launch Kit, other
than just 'full', like 'full retail' so I know how many computers I can put
it on, transfer rights, etc. I didn't find the information I was looking for,
but I did find this, and it seems there is still some confusion about this.
If so, I'll add my 2 cents in case it helps someone.

My understanding is that in order to get the download to use the kit keys
on, you have to sign up for/download a trial version, but use the kit keys
instead. I think the download file is the same whether it's a trial or full
version, it's the key you input at installation time that determines what
version you 'get'.

In signing up to download the install files, you likely gave an e-mail
address. MS is probably using this e-mail address you gave in tandem with one
of the signup/download/install/activation dates to trigger e-mail
notifications for trial version expiration.

I don't think they're keeping track of whether or not you have the trial, or
any other, version installed as far as the e-mail is concerned. They're
keeping track of how long you have the right to use the trial version you
signed up for, whether you are using it or not.

I never installed the trial version. I used my launch key. I still got trial
expiration related e-mails as well.
