When I want to update the table of contents field in Word I usually
put the cursor in the field and press F9. but now, after having
uppgraded to OS10.3, Word does not react . Instead all windows on the
screen spread out. That is, Panther seem to have kidnapped my F9 key
when in Word . Any idea how to get it back to its normal functioning
with Word?

System Preferences->Expose
then steal your f9 back by assigning a new key combination.
