F9 and F11 apply to Fields which you most likely do not have.

What version of Word are you using?
Does F1 get Help?
Is there a character to the right of the insertion point when you press
the Delete key?
Have you borrowed anothe Keyboard to try?

explanation of your symptoms and tests.

On the General tab of Tools | Options, clear the check boxes for both items
