Function Keys F13-F16

Running Word 2004 on an iMac G5 under OS X 10.4.2 with 512 MB memory.
My keyboard has function keys F13 through F16 in addition to the first
12 described in online Help. I have not found a way to attach these keys
to Commands via the Tools-Customize dialog.

Does Word recognize them ? If so, how do I assign them to commands ?

TIA for any directions or ideas.

Thanks much for the response, but fraid not. System
Preferences-Keyboard & Mouse-Help has no entries for F13, F14, F15 or
F16, i.e., "No pages with your search words were found."

The iMac G5 User's Guide, downloadable via a search at
http://search.info.apple.com/, says at p. 25 that pressing F14
decreases screen contrast, while F15 increases it. And, that is true.

But, I can find no means of changing them as is possible with other
function keys via System Preferences-Keyboard & Mouse- Keyboard
Shortcuts.

F13 can, apparently, be assigned to "all Applications" -- at least the
"+" window accepts it (I haven't tried to complete an assignment). But,
inserting F16 in the Keyboard Shortcuts assignment window simply
produces an alert sound. (F14 and 15 do the same, but, as indicated
above, at least I know what they are already assigned to.)

Hi Will -

I believe you're running into something I've witnessed a number of
times over the last 30 years. You can call it a 'time warp',
'technology lag-time', 'generation gap', whatever, but I believe Apple
is just trying to stay one step ahead of the curve by providing
additional function keys for which they, themselves, have no use within
the OS (at least, not yet). They are simply making them available to
developers of Mac hardware & software which has not yet taken advantage
of the new keys. I'm sure there will be any number of developers who
will address them in future releases of their respective products, but
it seems there should be some way to assign/reassign them through the
Prefs. Of course, Apple may be intentionally reserving them for use in
future updates.
