Every time I type the number "4" in a cell and move onto the next cell, it converts the "4" to a date of "1/5/1904". Also, whenever I attempt to type "4-5" into a cell, it converts it to a date of "4/5/2009".

Is there a way to disable this functionality?

You must have the cell formatted as a date. Change the format to general. As
far as the 4-5, Excel "thinks" you mean to enter a date. If you just want
that as a text value precede it with an apostrophe: '4-5
