Funny character

All of a sudden when I open a new document, I am getting
this funny character, looks like a reversed P by my cursor.
How can I get rid of it?

Gunther,

It is a Pilcrow or the symbol Word uses to indicating a
paragraph mark.

it is the paragraph indicator -- and you evidentally clicked on the
SHOW/HIDE toolbar button (up next to the zoom button) on the standard
toolbar. Click it again to turn it off.

Having it on is helpful if you are having formatting problems -- because it
does show you some of what is going on (manual line breaks vs paragraph
returns or tab instead of spaces...)
