Funny symbols in Word 2000

I was able to delete the paragraph mark or pilcrow when I
open a new word document. However, I still have a line
under the cursor as I type. How do I remove that annoying
line? I have followed the document "What do all those
funny marks, like the dots....mean?" which was helpful
with the paragraph mark.

That line does not move along with the cursor, however,

it stays on the left side of the page when I complete a
sentence.

That mark (in Normal view only) shows the end of the document. There is no
way to get rid of it.

The line under the cursor is removed by going to View on
toolbar, then unclick Normal. It defaults to Print View.

I did mention that it is displayed only in Normal view. If you're happy with
Print Layout view, then that's the solution.
