Urgent! No Risks & Issues Assigned on PWA

All,

I have a question regarding task types.

Initally I tried fixed work on enterprise template and folllowed on all
projects.
But this changes the duration and resource units %. But we want to set the
resource units to 10 % of entire duration. So we switched to fixed duration.
But now when we put the more actual hours and remaining hours on pwa
timesheet. After saving the project plan, it bumps up the resource units to
200%.
We don't want this, but we want the units to stay as 10% and the duration
should change and not work. Is this possible?.

Note: Timesheet tracking on actual hr entry day by day.

many thanks!

Sankar --

I think what you want is Fixed Units. Do know this, however:

1. If you assign a resource at a particular Units value, such as 25%,
Microsoft Project assigns the resource to work 2 hours per day across the
life (Duration) of the task and displays the 25% Units value to the right of
the resource name in the Gantt Chart portion of the Gantt Chart view.

2. If the resource enters 4 hours of Actual Work on a particular day, then
Microsoft Project calculates the Peak Units as 50%, and displays this 50%
Peak Units value to the right of the resource name, while the original 25%
Units value is maintained for each day of Remaining Work across the
remaining life of the project.

3. The trouble with his situation is that you cannot see the original Units
value anywhere in the Gantt Chart view. You must apply either the Task
Usage view or Resource Usage view and then apply the % Allocation details in
the timephased grid.

This confuses people, so it is something of which you need to be aware.
Hope this helps.

Dale,
First, many thanks for your reply. Your FAQ in projectexperts site is bible
for me. Many times helped me a lot.
I tried as Fixed units of 20%, but the start and end date changed
immediately. I don't want this change.
The resource units should stay as 20% , my orginal start date and end date
should not change and work might change say more days.

Is this possible?

Thanks!

It seems like you really need a FIXED task (one that never changes).
However, this is not possible in Project.
But here is what you can do.

- Change your task to Fixed Units as Dale pointed out in his
explanation. This will make sure that future assignments will have 20%
units.
- Fix the start date of the task to the desired start date using a
constraint (Must Start On, or Start No Earlier Than). I prefer a Start
No Earlier Than, as this leaves more flexibility in the plan.
- Add a deadline to the task where deadline date = desired end date.
This will make sure that you get a warning whenever the end date gets
delayed.

However, keep in mind following remarks!
- If one of your resourecs on the task enters his first actual work on
the task on a date different from the start date, the task will move!
- If a resource enters MORE actual work on a day than planned (4h
instead of 2h), the task duration will decrease. With LESS actual work
than planned, the end date gets delayed.

Hope this helps,
Guidho

You can't merely change the Units value once you have already assigned a
resource. If you didn't set the Units value correctly, remove the resource
first, and then assign the resource again at 20% Units. This will preserve
your original estimated Duration. Hope this helps.
