Try removing the Microsoft Preferences folder, located here:
Macintosh HD:System Folder
references:Microsoft
Move it to the Desktop. Then try opening documents in Excel and Word. If
that helps, trash the folder. Otherwise, move it back.
If that doesn't help, try increasing the memory allocation to each
application. Click on the application icon in the Finder, and then go to
File -> Get Info -> Memory. Set the Preferred size to at least 25000K.
Repeat for each application.
Also, make sure you have the latest updates applied.
* Microsoft Office 2001 Service Release 1
* Microsoft Word 2001 for Mac Security Update: Macro Vulnerability
* Microsoft PowerPoint/Excel 2001 Macro Security Update
* Entourage 2001 - Hotmail Updater
* Microsoft Office 2001 SSL Security Updater
You can get all of these from:

Lastly, if you still find that your computer is malfunctioning, you probably
need to remove and re-install Office. Download the Office Remover
<
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx?pid=download&location=/mac/down
load/office2001/RemoveOffice.xml&secid=10&ssid=3>, run the tool, and
re-install Office from the CD.
