Gantt Chart View

is it possible to print the gantt chart without printing the list of tasks on
the left hand side??

Yes. I created a simple table with only one column, the set the column
width to zero. Print the Gantt with this table, and no columns appear
in the print out.

Excellent. Thanks Dave. So can i reshow a hidden column at some point? i
have not found this in the edit or view menus or in the help file and have
had to reload my file before i saved! because i still want to access and
change that information in future.
Thanks

Hi Micayla,

Re-show by Insert, Column.

OBTW, you can also achieve the right-only print by just putting the width of
the TWO leftmost columns to zero, then shifting the Split bar completely
left.

Good idea to just hide the 2 left columns, Jan.
As far as re-showing the hidden columns, I think the Insert, Column
will insert an additional column into the table, the hidden column will
still be hidden and you'll have duplicate columns. To re-show the
column, you can go into the table dialog box (View, Table, More Tables
and select the appropriate table) and set the column width to some
number. Or, if you're patient, you can put the cursor just a tiny bit
to the right of the column divider up in the labels area and click and
drag to the right and pull the hidden column back out. Takes a little
practice.

No, inserting a column does not duplicate columns in Project. It's
simply a misnomer for "Unhiding" a column. All of the columns in
Project are finite and unique, including the custom columns. You cannot
duplicate them.

Maybe we're not talking about the same thing. When I hide a column in a
table, then right click on the column header to it's right and do an
"Insert Column", I get a duplicate column to the right of the hidden
one. I.e., I get 2 "Name" columns next to each other. That's what I
call "duplicate" columns. And project will let you have duplicate
columns in the same table.

But the data does not get duplicated. You can insert five Work columns,
but they will all show the same data, which exists only once in the
project. You cannot duplicate DATA by showing multiples of the same
column. That's why inserting a column is not a problem. I do it all the
time, as do most Project users. Whatever table or view you're using,
you can insert and delete columns to your heart's content to view
exactly the information you want. You will not be duplicating or
erasing ANY data.

As I said, we're not talking about the same thing. When you use Insert
column to replace a hidden column,. you're creating a second, or
duplicate column, albeit it has the same data as the other column. How
many work columns do you want in a table? I want only one, not 5. So I
retrive the hidden column rather than add a duplicate. Of course, if
you want multiples of the same column in the table, you can insert all
you want.

And to make things completely cluttered, when Project talks about "hiding" a
column, it means deleting it from the table, not putting width to zero.
Hence my suggestion unhide=insert column.

I follow you now, Jan. When I hide a column, I never use the shortcut,
because it deletes the column for some reason. Have never figured out
why it's called "Hide". I always just click and drag the column divider
to the left over to the adjacent column divider. Of course, that really
"hides" the column, doesn't delete it. Do it from the menu often
enough, and you'll have no columns left!
In fact, both methods work, just a difference in style.

Sorry, that's kind of what I was trying to get at, just not clearly!
;-) I think most people actually use the "Hide" and "Insert" functions
because it's easier and cleaner, and you can then get the columns in
the order you want. It's just a matter of right-clicking on the column
header and selecting a button, rather than having to drag borders back
and forth, and like you said earlier, trying to "grab" a hidden column
border is a pain. Much easier to "Hide" it with the built-in Project
function and then "Insert" it when you need it again later.
